I picked him up from the vets office at lunch and brought him home. He's walking very slowly and seems nervous almost as if he thinks he's going to get fussed at for something. Is he mad at me or am I just paranoid? Possibly a side effect of the anesthesia??

He's a little sore, which is understandable. And as for the nervousness, that is pretty typical. He just went through a completely new experience for him and doesn't know what to think of it. No, he's not mad at you. He probably doesn't even associate the procedure with you at all. Just give him extra cuddles and he'll return to a normal dog in a few days.

Getting fixed, or any surgery for that matter, can be a traumatic event for any dog. This is especially true of some pure breed dogs that tend to exhibit almost human type emotions. We have a pair of Shih Tzu's (both girls) and had them fixed at about twelve weeks old. We just gave them a lot of love and attention and they were fine after a few days.

I work in a animal hospital and that's normal it's the side effect of the anesthesia. some dogs can be sweet and sad looking and others are wild and crazy because they don't know whats going on. just watch him and make sure he's oh k.

I'm sure the vet gave you some meds for him and that also keeps him druged for a few days but don't let him jump around because he will play and jump like he never had anything done and pop stitches.(my female has done it)

he's probably tired and is feeling the after effects of the anesthesia.

when i had my chihuahua neutered and my bf's sister shih tzu spayed, they were pretty much pooped out when i brought them back home. they just slept on the bed for most of the night and didn't even play with each other! the next day, they were back to normal - minus the clumsiness with their e-collars.

and don't worry. he's not mad. :)
just make sure he doesn't move too much or lick at his stitches.

good luck and check on the stitches often~

Give him till tonight to make sure the effects of the anesthesia have completely worn off. It sounds normal. I have had many animals fixed. Try to get him to lay down and not walk around too much. He'll be fine.

Shih tzu's are very nervous dogs as well as very sensitive, it's all normal. He could think he's gonna be left again just love him and let him know you still love him..he's really sore at this point.

He was just through a very traumatic experience. Cuddle him and reassure him that he is a good boy and that he will be OK. Also. do not let him lick the area of the surgery. And he's probably sore.

My vet informed be the probability of a canines death is lower than one p.c.. yet they use a blend of drugs and so that they do blood checks. It lowers the prospect a touch in case you get blood checks done to make confident they're ok for surgical procedure.

Probably lingering effects of the anesthetic. Some dogs shake, growl, cower etc.

He should be fine by tomorrow and if not - not eating, lethargic, not drinking - call your vet.

We have a shitzu/chihuahua mix, he acted exactly like that to, give him about 24 hours, he'll be the same as he was.
