I can't believe that so many people think that it's their right to leave a cart in a parking lot so that some poor kid has to come and collect them. Their job is not to run all over the parking lot and pick up the carts. Their job is to get the carts that are in the cart corral from there to the store, which is a big enough job as it is. We seem to live in a "Not my problem" society where common sense and common courtesy have gone out the window! I am happy to see that there are a few descent people around still though. Maybe all isn't lost after all. Keep it up!

It isn't always just being lazy. I personally use the cart as a "walker" and sometimes I just can't make it to the cart corral and back again without the cart but I always try to leave it out of the way if I can't get it back to the corral. There have been a few times in the winter where it was almost impossible to get the cart to the car let alone returning it to a corral.

Some are just lazy, others just don't think about it. I've been guilty of not pushing my cart into the corral from time to time. I'm usually in a hurry, thinking about getting home, putting the groceries away, doing the chores, fixing dinner, getting to the library/doctor/wherever it is I need to be and just not thinking about it. It doesn't make it right, though, does it? And it's still inconsiderate.
I've gotten in the habit of returning them to the corrals, though, because my grandmother always does. No matter how busy she is, she pushes the carts over to their proper places. I'd never heard about this issue from the perspective of a person who works as a cart pusher. But it makes sense. Thanks so much! Because of your question, I'll remember to put them back every time and inform others about why it's important. Being busy is not a valid excuse for being inconsiderate.

I can honestly say that i am fat and lazy but 9 out of 10 times i return my cart to the corral. the only time i don't is when i go out at like 2 or 3am and the parking lot looks dark and empty, i don't walk far from my car and the front door

This annoys me to endless extent. But I'm that person who when I see it, I say, here, let me take that for you and take it to the corral which often times is less than 10 feet from where they were parking it to begin with.
As for the people who don't. I understand you can do what you like to do and no one should tell you what to do, but plain and simple it's a matter of courtesy and I hope one day a gust of wind blows a big cart right into your new BMW leaving it with not only a dent, but a scratch to match it.

I guess they're just thoughtless; I don't think most people intend to be unkind. Personally, I always get a cart from the cart corral to take with me into the store; it's one less that somebody has to push. And you're right - it DOES end up coming out of my pocket!

I think you will find that people who don't have nice cars themselves don't put carts in the car corral because it doesn't occur to them. People with nothing to lose don't care if YOU lose anything. Also you will find that those who need the exercise most are just too lazy to put them back.

A lot of times it is just laziness. Though, I will admit, I have been guilty of not returning my cart, particularly when the weather is bad--like raining really hard or hot with the sun beating down.
All together, with the exception of people with disabilities, most people cannot be bothered to do any more movement than they have to, which is one of the reasons why we have so many health problems in our society. It's also one of the reasons why so many people are overweight.

Some people are in a rush or far away from the corral or have small children they put in the car and some are just lazy.

The answer to this is obvious. People are selfish, self absorbed, and inconsiderate. The reason they don't is because they don't have to. If they leave it, they saved themselves 30 seconds. If they leave it, they are not penalized, they are not asked why they didn't put it back, they just drive away. They don't care if it hits someones car, they don't care if it blocks someone elses parking spot, they just don't care. Someone who puts the carts away is thinking of others and doing the right thing.
