Rocker Chick said it perfectly. I only responded to add this: DO NOT HANDLE WITH BARE HANDS. The capecium (the oil that makes the hot) comes off very easily once you slice them, and it is very very very difficult to remove from your fingers.
Buy some latex or plastic gloves (in the paint isle at a hardware store) in order to cut them up. If you don't, everything you touch will get the capecium on it, and it will BURN oh so bad, including delicate body parts like eyes and nether regions.
I've heard of a woman slicing jalapenos (about 1/5 the hottness level of habeneros) and then changing her baby's diaper......that poor baby didn't know what hit him.

Red Savinas and chocolate habaneros are the hottest but you won't be able to buy them in a market since they are usually only sold as plants or seeds.
You could check you market for habaneros in the produce department. They are usually yello orange or red and bell shaped (but small, not like bell peppers).
If you have an Asian market they might have some fresh hot peppers, possibly Thai peppers which would be good.
If you are out of luck on all those counts, go for some hot sauce and check the bottle for scoville units. The more, the merrier. You should hope to find some from about 150,000 and up.
A word of caution though. Some sauces use pepper extracts which makes them really really hot and you shouldn't use that stuff straight out of the bottle but mixed with other things, since it can physically burn your tongue.
A sauce like Dave's Insanity is pretty hot but even at that it is not so hot as others, including the sauces put out by Blair's.
If it is back to the market to get whatever they have, avoid the jalapenos and go for the green, mre elongated, finger-shaped ones (serranos). The pack more heat than jalapenos.
As a rule, except for the habanero scotch bonnet group, peppers with more pointed ends are hotter, so either fresh or dried, this can give you some indication, if a type shows up that no one has mentioned.
Good luck!

Ok Habanero may be the hottest, but if you want a lasting burn, try scotch-bonnet. Great places to find chillies are in your local Asian and Indian markets.

or serrano those are the tiny dark green ones. they're hot too
habanero's are indeed the hottest

The hottest of all peppers is the Habanero. It has a Scoville Units rating of 10+. Be sure to use them sparingly. A little goes a long way.

the hottest are habanero peppers. Most grocery stores carry them. You might want to find a latino store in your area to see if they carry them there. The chemical that causes the hot sensation on your tongue is called capsaicin and these peppers contain the most of any other pepper. Mighty tasty and hot!

The Mexican chili is meant to be the hottest, whether it's the nobly bits on it ..i don't know..i grow my own.. it's a weird plant.. they start off white, then turn green, then purple (at this stage ..believe me they are pretty hot) then they go red.. which is hotttt..although if you go into an Indian restaurant and ask them which is the hottest chili, they will let you taste the small green chili, what it is called.. i have no idea
