I live in an 80 year old house that has a fireplace in the living room. It was put in to be purely decorative (YEARS ago, before I owned the house) and I am thinking of putting a gas log in it. How safe is this to do? The floor below it is tile over a wood base floor. The fireplace itself is all brick except for the mantle, which is wooden. The back of the fireplace is one layer of brick thick that lies right up against the wall of my house (which is plaster/wood construction). I just want to make sure this is a safe thing to do...

It can be done safely but unless you are an expert in gas line installation -hire a professional. This can be a beautiful and economical as well as environmentally safe option but it is not a DIY. After the line is installed you can easily put in the fire log, fire on ice or another option you wish but the line it's self will need to be certified and for that I will always go with a pro. just my $0.02 worth.

You can have it done, if your willing to cough up the dough. Have a professional come in and evaluate everything before hand. The fireplace installer may decide you need addtional support under the floor to hold the weight of the new insert. They will also give you the best options for venting it.
