My husband's doc who treats him for Asthma said that hubby yawns even when he is not tired because his lungs need more air that what he is breathing in. He often yawns a lot before an asthma attack hits him.

There are several reasons:
1) When your body is tired, a yawn is a signal to the brain that it needs to rest.
2) When you wake up and yawn, it signals the brain to "power up"
3) It is the way that the body signals to another person that you are at ease and in a non-offense type posture.

***The last one is for real, check it out. Cats have the same primal instinct - have you ever noticed two cats come face to face and either one or both yawn right in the face of the other?

scientists used to believe it was our brain needed more oxygen but now they think that it's from cave man days before we had an actual language when one person would yawn it would tell the rest of the people it was time to go to sleep. they don't have any definite proof of the true reason behind yawning.

It is due to (medically speaking) O2 depervation or the lack of oxygen. When you are tired or getting sleepy, the oxygen level drops, therefore you yawn to increase the oxygen level to your brain. When you sleep your at a relaxed stated and the body dosn't demand the intense level of oxygen as would need during the day while you are active.
P.S. Good question!!!!

To intake oxygen.
The body's way of signaling that there is not enough activity to provide sufficient oxygen for the bloodstream to deliver to the brain. Another way of saying that boredom from inactivity can cause yawning to provide more intake of air.
