So many good answers...
I just would like to mention that French Bulldogs have terrier (terrors) in their background. So, sometimes the combination of stubborn/bully to hyper/nutty isn't a good ratio.
My picture is of my French Bulldog, Junior, giving squirrels some serious STINK EYE!
We will probably get an "English" Bulldog next time, even though both breeds have many health issues.
Good Luck!

I own a Jack Russell, yes they are very hyper but great house dogs. I also own a Basenji, also a super indoor dog. They are the size of a Beagle but unlike a Beagle don't bark.(not mute though). They hardly shed and love to be inside with people and also outside too(except in the rain-just don't like it). Check this breed out on the internet, there are a lot of websites about Basenjis and if u have any questions just email me and I will gladly help u out. I have noticed, with my Basenji, she thinks she's a big dog but locked up in a small dogs body(not mean wise though).

I love the poodle crosses, beacuase they are usually sweet and pretty smart. Also if you have allergies the hardly shed at all. I currently have a cockapoo, poodle and boxer mix. they are all inside, the boxer does like to play outside most of the day but she comes in and the evening and sleeps in her bed inside at night. I adore my cockapoo she was my first dog when I was on my own. she is super smart and so loving a huge snuggler.
We have had labs inside and they did great, but either way inside or out you have to commit to their training they need the attention, training and excercise.
I agree with you an the Jack Russell, they are really smart but they drive me nuts just personal opinion my dads friend raises them and would not own anything else. to each his own
I would suggest doing your research maybe check out a local dog show or shelter to see how what you might like. Several of the resue groups around us actually require 2 night trial for you and the dog before a commitment.
Good Luck :)

No such thing as a french boxer, and boxers tend to be pretty hyper dogs (probably less so than a jack russell, but still...). How about a standard poodle? They tend to be fun and energetic when you want them to be and couch potatoes at other times. They are about the height of a lab, but slimmer so it might not seem like as much dog.

Some big dogs can be great house dogs. In fact, a mastif is a wonderful house dog, even a wonderful apartment dog. They are very calm and don't need to run nearly as much as most dogs. Boxers, on the other hand, are terrible indoor dogs. Not because they are bad dogs, but because they keep a puppy personality most of their lives and have tons of energy, and if they aren't outside running and playing a great deal, they will "play" in your house and tear it up.
A nice mix might be a mid-sized dog from a shelter. I'd look for a smaller poodle mix. I like poodle/lab, poodle/australian shepard, poodle/golden retriever, myself. They are calm and intellegent and they don't look much like poodles so they won't embarrass your husband. Try http://www.petfinder.com

it all depends on what you want. small, or not hyper(big) most small dogs have alot of energy. I have a lab in my house and she is kinda big, but is a great animal. I would suggest a lab for sure, but if you want small, then you will have to do alot of research. alot of small dogs are either hyper, or bark alot. A jack russell is both hyper and loud. But if you have outside access then you can let it out to run, then it will be ok. it is all in how you train them too. I am for a lab, or mabey a mix dog that you adopt.

I have a JRT/Beagle that was rescued. He is a house dog and as long as he gets enough exercise and play time he's not too hyper for being inside.
I also have Lab mix though and the two of them wear each other out in the yard almost every night.
Good luck with your decision!

How about a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel? I just got one and he is an absolute dream. These dogs are classified as a toy breed but they are the largest of the toys so they are not annoying little rats like chihuahua types (no offense to Chi lovers!). They rarely bark and love to play or cuddle on your lap so they can happily be a mostlly indoor animal. They are really responsive to "their" humans' moods- so when we are mellow, he is mellow, and vice-versa. Very friendly, easy to train and also very beautiful. They have longer hair than the dogs you seem to be considering, if that's a factor, but they can be trimmed. Make sure you find a reputable breeder though, as they are prone to heart troubles if bred irresponsibly.

I agree with Louis G. Boston Terriers are excellent dogs as pets. And sounds like it may be a good "in between" dog from the breeds you mentioned. It sounds like your husband may want a "manly" type dog and you, a nice cuddly lap dog. Well, Boston terriers are a good mix of these. Good luck!

I strongly recommend a minuature dachshund. Especially for an inside dog. They are so sweet, loving, and smart. They are also the only breed of dog that produces NO doggie odor. Trust me, you wont be sorry.
