I moved my children at about 18 months b/c my kids climbed out and i was scared they would fall on their little heads climbing out of the crib. I moved them to a toddler bed and put pillows on the floor for the first few nights b/c they both did fall off a time or two. But, they got used to it and quit. I never had a problem with them roaming. If they woke up they just came straight to my room. But, I wouldn't suggest that you close the door b/c you may not be able to hear her. But, a baby gate might be a good idea! When you first move her she will try to get up a lot, but you just have to be consistent and make them stay in their bed. When they figure out that you mean business, they will stop trying. Good luck!

When they are able to crawl out of the crib. If you think about it the only advantage to being in a crib is that it keeps them confined. But if they learn how to escape, then there is no reason for it. It is actually more dangerous because they could injure themselves climbing out. If she has displayed that she can climb out, I'd make the switch.
And Yes I'd definately prevent roaming as best as possible. shut doors, put up gates and those child door locks are handy too. The ones that fit over the knob. Also, make sure that funiture in their room is secure, dressers & shelves are secured to the walls and anything that they shouldn't play with or play with by themselves is put out of reach.

I believe our doctor told us at 2 yrs move from the crib to the bed. As far as roaming- she will be able to figure out the door... either the saftey knob or a gate... we have a gate, but we'll have to see when the time comes how effective it is- we have a stairs close by our rooms, so I always worry- we might even put a gate up by the stairs as well as in his door way when he gets that age so he won't fall.

I think you should keep the door closed and get once of those child proof, plastic door covers to make sure once she learns how to open a door she can't get out. You could also put a safety gate in the doorway instead of keeping the door closed. I would imagine that she could get into a good bit of danger by being able to roam the house unattended.

I would suggest you buy a toddler bed with rails and put a baby gate on your babys bedroom door so she can not leave the room at night. I am a mom and let me tell you this works. Get your baby monitor working and after a couple of nights your life will be back to normal. You would not want your baby to fall and hurt herself, so take every precaution. Also an amazing time to introduce reading to your child, you and she will enjoy this night time activity.

once she has started getting out of the crib by herself, it is really not that safe to leave her in it. you don't want her falling out and injuring herself.
as for roaming, closing the door is an option but that may scare her. how about a bed with rails and a bell on the doorknob that would jingle if she opened it?

After the first time my son crawled out of his crib, I moved him to a toddler bed. He was only 18 months old.
To keep him in his room, we put up a safety gate at his doorway. If he woke up super early, he would just play in his room until he saw me at his doorway.
Good Luck.

The first time they climb out they should be moved to a bed. I know kids that have climbed out at 10 months and some much later but either way, it's bed time.

My daughter switched to a "big girl" bed when she was 2 and my son switched when he was 1 (but only because he matured a lot faster than her). And they love it because now they can get in and out of bed as they please, which is easier on me because Im not having to get up in the middle of the night to get them out of bed, they can come to me and curl up in my bed without me even knowing about it! (Im a very heavy sleeper). The only downside to the toddler bed IS also the fact that they can get in and out as they please. This means that time outs in their rooms are a lot harder because there isnt the crib to put them in that they cant get out of. You might need to invest in a baby gate as well.

well that depend's on when you really want to stick her in it. My daughter was out of her at about when she was year old. but she does sleep with us. she had gotten really really sick and ever since that she hasn't been in her crib. but i do have a friend and her son was 3 year's old and still was in his crib. so it depend's on when you think she is ready too and when you want to stick her in one.
