Okay, here's what I do...
If you're looking for an inexpensive way to straighten your hair without damaging it go do this...
1. so that your hair doesn't frizz go get some shinning balm (walmart has the garnier fructis citrus brand... that's what i use). put it in when your hair is damp, when you're all done it will leave your hair sleak and shinny.
2. blow dry your hair using a flat brush while doing so... this will straighten your hair as much as possible without using the straightener.
3. get a CERAMIC straightener (again, something you can find at walmart)... i prefer ones that have about a 1 inch width, but that is up to you. set the temperature depending on how thick your hair is. flip your head over and begin to use the straightener starting with the hair closest to the back of your neck and work your way up to your forehead.
4. stand up straight and shake your hair out, brush through it and use the straightener to fix any spots that you think need fixing or styling. use a tiny bit of the shinning balm if you want, just to give it that extra softness.
5. brush through it again, maybe spray it with a little hair spray, but not much... and you're done.
it will take anywhere from 15 to 45 minutes depending on your hair type... blowdrying usually takes the longest!

I'm not an expert on too many things, but I have intensely curly hair and I've learned a lot about how to control and straighten my hair over the years.
First off, Do not buy anything from TV. If your talking about the MaxiGlide straightener, it is junk! What I suggest you do is buy a good quality blow dryer and flat iron. An easy route to blow drying is purchasing an ion "brush-blow dryer" . But, if you like a classic dryer, a round brush and an ion blow dryer by CHI is your best bet. As far as flat irons, I've tried them all. CHI,FHI,MaxiGlide,Superstarr,Sedu,Rusk,
etc. and only one has really made me happy. I suggest a 1 inch Solia flat iron. Regardless of if you have long hair, the one inch is easier to reach your roots with, and it can even give you nice waves and curls if wanted. Folica.com is the best place to purchase both your Solia and your blow dryer.
Now, for your blow dryer:
Let your hair dry just a little bit, and then put in a product which you can get at Target and most other places called "Paves Professional Straight and Narrow Balm". Next, use a blow dryer and section your hair. When blow drying your goal is to dry, but not completely straighten your hair. Don't go too hard on your hair, you don't want to cause extra damage.
Once your hair is completely dry and somewhat "relaxed", part it into sections once again. I'd say about 2 inch sections would be easiest to style. Then, apply a pump of "Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Serum" to each 2 inch section. Run the straightener from roots to ends about 1-2 times and clip back the straightened hair as you go. This should not take you very long because the Solia flat iron works very quickly and leaves your hair sillky and smooth. BE CAREFUL, do not hold the straightener over your hair, ever. Keep it moving!
You should always use a deep conditioner 1-2 times a week to keep your hair in its best shape. I like old fashioned "Cholesterol Conditioner" but Pantene has some really great deep conditioners and hair masks as well. Also, I recommend a trim to your ends every 1-2 months to get the best results.
Hope this helped. And, I really do recommend the one inch Solia because I have super curly hair and this flat iron allows me to wear bangs, which usually is not possible for curly haired girls. It keeps out humidity wonderfully and I promise that you will be really pleased with the results. I've tried the Sedu, which folica.com advertises as the best straightener available, but I promise you that though it does straighten, the puff will be back in your hair within 2 hours. Trust me, the solia is the way to go! I'll leave you the link to it. I think they even have a pink version now!

and for the blowdryer..a couple of options:

Trust me, its all worth every penny.

As far as the cream goes, look for Garnier's length and strength leave in conditioner and smoothing milk. They really help your hair to become stronger and softer. I use both of them daily and I have noticed a great change in my hair. They are about 3 dollars each. Sometimes in the Sunday paper, there are $1 off coupons for Garnier products. Garnier products are in a lime green plastic. You can find it at Walmart and Target for sure. I have long hair about 2 inches from my butt and I straighten it as well, so I hope you take it from someone who has daily experience. When you put the leave in cream conditioner, make sure you get the ends pretty well. Good luck!

ok cpl months ago i was at the same place as u right now...the thing is if u have the right straightener you do not need a creme to go along with it...you just have to have the right straightener...i know this sounds weird but u have to overlook your options and stop looking at those commercial because their main focus for the straightening are the cremes not the straightener itself....my solution was and still is the new straightener from Remington, and the plate is not ceramic and it has the textile form to it i cant remember the exact name for it...but the thing is that textile makes ur hair so silky and smooth like u never would believe your hair could ever even achieve...i know because i use and my hair is a curly mess girl....you can buy it at walmart they just came out cpl months ago....and its only 39.94...so worth it ok girl hope u become a believer like i did kisses & hugs ciaaooo =D

do NOT iron using a clothes iron
any heat will damage your hair
if you have serious issues, please consider Japanese hair straightening
the dryer-straighteneer combo is a rip off, most things on TV advertised like that usually are.....
use BioSilk onyour hair if you decide to straighten it, please invest in a ceramic plated iron as well! and pleeaaase....dont do this everyday, you're killing your hair!
Biolage makes a great deep conditioner, it comes in about a 22 ounce tub, its called Hydrotherape....its about $20 but it LASTS. get the one for dry, coarse hair if you notice your hair is like this after ironing. :)

My sister has really long, curly hair. She uses an actual iron on an ironing board. I think she may put it between a towel to not damage it. Hope this helps.

Virtually any heat based system is hard on your hair.
So is washing it frequently.
If you've got the money, and want it _straight_ you could consider japanese hair straightening.
