Different company have different phone systems. Some, when you press "0" goes directly to a representative. But for some companies there is a direct extension. When you go through the button pressing and actually speak with a rep, ask them how you get through directly.
They will tell you, or at least I do.
I find the voice prompts more annoying then the button pressing.

I find that a lot of the time if you dont press anythink and just keep hanging on, the phone will ring and you will be put straight through but do not press any numbers. Give it a try 9 out of 10 times it works

A very good question! Most automated systems I've visited work in a 'loop' ie. if you don't press a button you start again; and if you're lucky/unlucky enough to reach a real person, you're connected to a place you don't want to be. Lots of this type of system use a Premium Number, and we pay them for the privilege of 'getting nowhere'. I hope we all get a good answer here!
EXTRA: The US links might be ok for the US, but not here in the UK

Press star and the hash sign together and repeatedly quickly. This forces the system to jump to a person.
Works, I've done it.
