We have a very closely knit family and I have a large family as well. My sister has come to town twice since my baby was born 4 weeks ago. Her job allows her to travel. She also came on my due date. I was overdue and she had to go back home for work. That's three times in one month to see me and my baby. We live 5 hours apart, driving.
That's not all. She has been SO MUCH of a help, loves my baby immensely and the baby loves her too. I call her "Nanny Number One."
I have been thinking about asking her to be my daughter's Godmother although she is already an aunt. She deserves some distinction and I can't perish the thought. What do you all think? Please keep in mind that, yes I do understand the meaning and purpose of Godparenting.
If I decide to do this, I'd make an announcement when my family are all together next Thursday, Thanksgiving Day.
I am married and have one other daughter, FYI - whom loves her more than life as well. She's good with her, too. Thanks!

Should probably see what dear hubby has to say about it...but, there is nothing at all wrong with it... as a matter of fact...I have the custody of my children willed to my sister if something would happen to me so that they don't have to go through the justice system and be put through the fostering process.

The act of being a godparent has always been reserved for the person you trust with your child, and who you would like to care for your child if you passed. It sounds as if that person is your sister. And there's nothing unusual about that, it's quite common... I'd dare to say more common than non relatives, since there's no guarantee they will remain in the childs life or yours.
My sister is godmother to two of my children, my brother godfather to another, and my youngest brother godfather to another. The only one of my child who has a godparent who is not a direct relative is my oldest, who's godmother is my best friend.

I don't understand why you would even ask this !!
I certainly wouldn't have a stranger be a godparent !!! OF COURSE having a sister or ANY family member is the right choice. Or at least that is the way it is where I am from.
So nice to hear of a family who loves each other! Keep up the good work!!

Whats wrong with that . What an honor you are bestowing upon your sister,Not only is she an Aunt but also a Godmother, That makes her very special. and when your baby grows up, he will Say Auntie .............. You are my special Aunt. My Daughter is an Aunt and a Godmother to my oldest daughters son, He is now 10 what a great relationship they have.My daughter knew what she was doing when she bestowed that great gift to my youngest daughter.

there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. Atleast you know that your daughter will always have a Godmother close by . My uncle is Godfather to my brother. Its a pretty common thing. You never know, one of these good days when she is travelling, she'll take the baby with her for even more bonding.

I'm a godmother to my younger brother. My dad is the godfather to my cousin., etc. Everyone iin my family basically has a family member for a godparent. Nothing wrong. In fact, it is a good idea.

No, but remember this, you want someone that is most like you to raise your child if something happens to you. You want someone with almost the same ideas for that child. The baby will be loved no matter what but, if you choose your sister make sure you make it legal so that if the time comes the baby is with the person that you picked. I picked my sister and made it legal because Family's will fight. You do what your heart tells you and if someone gets upset about who you picked you tell them, I picked the person that I believe is most like me.
Good Luck

Not at all! I think it would be wonderful for you to make your sister godmother! That is a wonderful gift she will share with you forever. I would love to be godmother to my niece but unfortunately in the tradition of my brother in laws family they do not declare godparents.
I think your family would be happy with your decision. Congrats on your little one and I know you will make the right decision. Do what is in your heart.

She has helped you so much, she deserves it. It's not wrong. In most cases it's actually a close family or friend, so go for it! Congrats on the cute little girl.
