I like the questions your 10-year-old is thinking :)
"Some things are "special" to people. If other kids say your house is ugly or your mom is ugly, it makes you feel really badly. It makes you feel worse than if they were just talking about someone you didn't know.
Well, sacreligious is like that. It's someone saying something about someones god. And that person takes deep offense to that thing. It's important to not TRY to offend and be sacreligious - while at the same time feeling ok about standing up for what you believe."

Resentment put upon those who are willing to sack or question or even dispel someone else's religious, patriot or economic beliefs.
Here is a short list of those who have been considered and even condemned for being sacrilegious to mainstream ways of acting.
Jesus, Mohammad, Buddha, Confucius, Martin Luther King, Carl Sagon, Barbara Thiering, Martin Luther, Martin Luther King, King James, Einstein, John Nash, Steven Hawkings, and oh yes Darwin... to name a few.

Sacrilege is the violation or injurious treatment of a sacred object. In a less proper sense, any transgression against the virtue of religion would be a sacrilege. It can come in the form of irreverence to sacred persons, places, and things.
It would be like destoying someone personal Bible, or something they hold as an important article of their faith, or defacing a community church. That kind of thing.

The concept of sacrilege requires a religous belief to be properly understood. Is the 10 year old thus endowed?

Perhaps you and your ten year old could visit a priest and receive a very good explanation.

I personally would not teach this idea to a ten year old. The idea assumes that God could be offended. This is absurd. God is not insecure.

It is a crime made up by the clergy to defend gods and religions that can not defend themselves.
