I know that in the war the British explained their military success at one point as being due to the troops eating carrots (may have also been due to a carrot surplas, maybe both!). Regarding the curls and crusts, i suppose curls were seen as fashionable in the post-war period and that's how the saying arose (because crusts are nutritionally the poorest part of the bread, getting children to eat them stems more from economy than from nutritional reasons). I've had a bit too much wine so hope this makes sense! x

No thats burnt toast you're thinking of!

As for carrots :

A common urban legend is that carrots aid a human being's night vision. It is believed that disinformation introduced in 1940 by John "Cat's Eyes" Cunningham during the Battle of Britain was an attempt to cover up the discovery and use of radar technologies . It reinforced existing German folklore and helped to encourage children to eat the vegetable. Lack of Vitamin A can, however, cause poor vision and can be restored by adding Vitamin A back into the diet.

Crusts and carrots are good for you, but its not really true about making your hair curly or seeing in the dark. However 4 year old eats crusts "coz makes her hair curly" and she has extremely curly hair!

My mum used to tell me that all the time! But I ate my crusts and no my hair is still as straight as ever. I guess she just told me that to get me to eat them. Same as carrots make you see in the dark (although I think that one is true).

Nope, not true. Before you're born, the follicles of your hair are shaped in either a curved or straight shape. If it's curved, your hair will grown in curly or wavy. Straight, and it will grow in, believe it or not, straight. ;)

So, eating the crust off of bread isn't going to change your natural hair pattern.

Sound like an old wives tale to me. When you are little you are still growing, when I was little my hair was straight and now that I'm old my hair is wavy. This has nothing to do with crusts! Its genetics! Its same thing as a young child with bleach blonde hair turning into a teenager with brown hair. We change as we grow.

Are you a troll or a youthful youngster? For the a million% you're literally not a troll i will respond to you. No, it gained't. Crust is only the position the bread's edges touched the nice and cozy pan, it is clone of a few thing of the bread.

I eat loads and loads of bread crusts... and my hair is straight.

I don't know why people tell their children about that, I don't think it's a way to scare them...

After all, what is wrong with those poor li'l crusts?
