If you have MS Office Suite installed on your computer, you can do any of the things you mentioned in your question. It's just a matter of knowing which program included in the MS Suite to use. Basically, MS Word is used for creating letters or correspondences. Probably you may generate invoices and simple reports as well. For posters and presentations, you might want to use PowerPoint. Excel is for creating spreadsheets/tables and lastly, Access for creating databases.

Power Point is best for presentations and Word is great for the letters reports etc since it is the most widely accepted program that you can save your document in and go just about to any publisher and they will usually be able to open it.

I have Word and Publisher.

All Publisher does is present a myriad of templates and give you space to add clipart or text.

If you are familiar with text boxes, clipart, Wordart, Autoshapes, and have any graphics, Word is all you need. You provide the imagination and ingenuity.

Open Office does everything that Microsoft Office (super set of Microsoft Word) can do. And Open Office is fee.
