We recently brought home a new cat that insists on peeing on the sofa. I have used the Natures Miracle spray on the sofa to get rid of the smell, but I don't know how to get him to stop. I had heard of Feliway, a plug in that is supposed to stop cats from fighting and spraying. I just didn't know how well it worked. Anyone ever tried it?

He has been neutered and for the most part seems to be happy. He does like to fight with one of my other cats so I don't know if that is a sign that maybe he is stressed. He only pees at night when we are all sleeping. So I assume he knows better or I would think that he would do it during the day.

Cats urinating outside the litter box is the most common complaint from cat owners and the most common reason people give up cats.

Feliway is a cat pheromone that is supposed to relieve anxiety, stress etc. I have not used it myself, but have heard good things about it.

Some other things we usually recommend are this:
Number of litter boxes should be 1 more than the number of cats in the house. So for example if you have 2 cats, you should have 3 litter boxes. They should not be set immediately next to each other. They can be in the same room or area, but there should be space between them if they are in the same area.

Try changing litter. Using litter that has low dust and no scent is the best place to start. Try setting out several boxes (you can use disposable pans ) with different types of litter and see what the cat prefers.

Make sure the litter box is large enough for the cat. If they are not able to fit into the box comfortably, or to dig and bury they may choose not to use it all together.

Good luck!

Yes, I have been using Feliway for a long time now. It works, I promise. Now, I don't use the spray, I use the plug-ins. I have three in my home and what they have done is quite the list: First, while my kitten was very ill, his older brother "acted out" by spraying all over the house. The vet explained that he was of course jealous of all attention being focused on kitten and also scared because he knew the kitten was sick. Okay, so the spray did the trick at this time, I sprayed on walls and the pheramones took care of him doing it again. Fast forward to after the kitten passed away, my cat was upset, nervous, and just a mess. I put the plug in units in and this time, the reasoning is that the pheramones given off from the Feliway mimick what he produces/secreets as a "yeah, this is my area" kind of feeling - so security, always. As I said, I've used them forever now and I buy directly from Ebay in lots of 12 for about $14.30 a refill.

feliway relieves stress from cats. In that aspect, it may work if peeing on the sofa is due to stress. But the best way is to take the cat and put it in the litterbox when you see him pee outside. Or neuter him if he is marking his territory. Or check if he has some urinary tract infection or crystals. I used feliway when we were at a hotel, my cat was happy and playful, instead of being scared of the new place, but he never pees outside so I don't know about that. And keep in mind that feliway relieves some stress, but it doesn't hypnotise them! I mean he still had the same behaviour in general, he was just a little happier.
