According to surveys, a staggering 45% of all Americans (that's a 135 million people) believe that the Universe is less than 10,000 years old as stated in the Bible.

Both old and young ages for the earth have been accepted, by Christians, as being consistent with treating the bible as the word of God.
That different groups of Christians disagree as to how the text, the theology and the evidence from science should be interpreted is also clear.
Archbishop Ussher's date of 4004 BC for the creation of the earth was never part of the biblical text, though many versions carried it as a marginal reference.
I strongly recommend Stephen Jay Gould's essay on Archbishop Ussher.
I suspect many would be surprised at it.

According to the bible, it is approximately 6,000 years. The Early Church Fathers teach that when the fall happened, the Earth became instantly old. So, we can't really see how old the earth is, because it is fallen. With God there is no time, and this timelessness is not what we experience any longer. We are in time, as a result of the Fall.
Those that seek after God, in Faith, can experience timelessness because they experience the energies of God, and He is without time. I do know of a certain Elder in Greece that had the ability to do things outside time. Elder Prophyrios. Strange outside time miracles happened around him constantly, and was experienced by many, even a whole busload of nuns experienced this timelessness around him. You can see that documented in the book "The Mountain of Silence".
Because of some of this timelessness, I know that the earth seems old, billions of years old, but is actually quite young.
So, it is both, it is old and young.
To understand Ancient Christianity, Paradox is something you have to get used to.

Tracing back, and adding up the ages of the various people mentioned in the Bible, several people (the most famous of whom was Archbishop Ussher) have calculated that the Earth is now about 6000 years old -- having been created about 4000 B.C.

Well, if you go through all the geneology listings, they give the ages of birth, children and death and you can calculate it all the way up to Christ. That number is 4-5,000 I think. But..... The Isrealite calendar was not the same as we use today, so those numbers do not reflect years as we know them today. Also I heard that when the nation split, Israel and Juday both had a different calendar. Add to that, God says that to Him a day is like a thousand years and a thousand years like a day. So, could the creation story have taken 7,000 years?? Who knows? I don't think we can really determine that.

The generally accepted age for the Earth and the rest of the solar system is about 4.55 billion years (plus or minus about 1%). This value is derived from several different lines of evidence.
Nowhere in the Bible is this figure explicitly contradicted....so - I'll go with that figure.

Genesis 1:1 just says "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." That allows for any amount of time.
The seven creative days did not begin until after that time.

I am a Christian, and I live according to the word of God. He tells us not to look behind us, but to look towards our future He has for those who obey and follow Him. I place all of my confidence and faith in Him and non of what science or man has to offer. The age of this earth has no berring on where i've been, where I am now, and where I am going with the Lord.
