It is a virus or it can also be caused by excess stomach acid - Try Biotene tooth and mouth care and Zantac OTC (or what ever OTC remedy you have used successfully before-this one just happens to be one I have used with success) - if they clear up and you are able to sleep you have found the culprit - excess stomach acid - change your diet to one low in acids (lemon, orange, etc) and fats (fried foods, red meats, etc) Switch to lower acids (apples, bananas, etc) and lower fats (fish, skinless baked chicken, pasta, etc) eat earlier at night like before 7pm and that should make a huge difference. Also always be sure to drink 8 -8oz glasses of water a day. Try taking a 1/2 hour walk after dinner if you can (use the buddy system) this will all help with the stress and increase your ability to sleep.
I have been where you are and my Dr was singularly unhelpful prescribing for everything but the 2 major symptoms-my aunt a clinical dietitian recommended this course of action and it worked wonders as a bonus I lost 32lbs!

You just answered your own question. Stress is the main factor and a bad diet. Talk with your Dr on advice of what you should be eating and what is causing you stress and sleep deprivation, also try wearing a lip balm of some sort when you are out this winter Good luck :)

See your Md. he has a RX for cold sores, medically called herpes simplex Get healthier sleep habits. You can learn to control the stress level. Lysine available at health food stores is also an answer you may want to look into. Increase the use of Corn in yout diet.

You just answered your own question. Stress and sleep deprivation, among other common triggers. When you're stressed out and sleep deprived, your immune system is not functioning at it's best and your body cannot fight back the virus (HHV/HSV) that causes cold sores. If you go to your GP, he or she can perscribe you an antiviral such as valtrex or acyclovir to help keep them under control until you are willing and/or able to start paying attention to your body and it's needs so it can fight it on it's own.

It's caused by a virus, Herpes Simplex II. L-Lysine will stop it from growing but does not kill it. Only take the L-Lysine for a while to get it under control and then stop as it will elevate your blood pressure. Take some when you start to get the sniffles in the winter and you will not get "colds". Our healthcare system is not real good as MDs will not prescribe OTC meds most of the time and they scoff at holistic healing. {IT'S ALL ABOUT THE MONEY!!]

That or it could be a cause or lack of vitamin c. I used to get them all the time and they were so irritatating but I started taking more vitamins and that helped tremendously.
