My dog races through the living room then the family room, over and over again. Why?

Dogs typically do this to get exercise and "let off some steam" (especially if they don't get out much to play or run outside). They also do this to be playful and when they get excited. My dog runs through the house like that when the kids come home from school, for instance.

Boredom and lack of sufficient exercise. It's called franging, and they do mostly grow out of it, but it always means not enough walkies or play. My dog is 3 1/2, and he still does it, especially when it rains.
