My wife and I broke down and bought a Dyson. It's great! Unless you want one that will break after a few months, it's worth the extra money.

dysons are brilliant until you try to suck up a bit of paper, an elastic band or anything other than dust. I swear by a Henry. Might be hard work if you have carpet with a deep pile, but it sucks up anything. ideal for kids who leave the bedroom a mess ha ha. now you see it now you don't.

Agree. Which? reports rate Dyson poorly for reliability and cost.
A couple of years ago, the Electrolux Boilido was a Which? "best buy" and I have been very pleased with mine.

The German company Miele makes an excellent product... http://www.miele.co.uk/products/Features.aspx?pid=545
My Miele hoover (as you in the UK call them) has been going strong since 1983.... They are a bit pricey but it may very well be the has hoover that you will ever purchase.
