Rice is tasty to most cats. Also, malt seems to be a pleasant flavor, because I have seen lots of malt flavored medicines and products that kitties don't seem to mind taking.
Once, I fed my older cat some angel food cake, because I thought
a) he would hate it
b) a crumb could not possibly hurt him because angel food cake does not have very many ingredients
c) he is a very well mannered cat who waits patiently for a treat whenever I am eating, and does not whine, beg or try to steal. He just waits quietly and perks up very slightly whenever I take a bite. I cannot resist the good kitty manners... but since he would hate it he would stop waiting for me to give him some
He loved it. ><
My new kitten and my brother's cat are both cheese thieves. I think they will eat their body weight in cheddar cheese if given the opportunity.

My cat once ate some green and red peppers leftover on a plate and he dragged his butt around on the carpet for a week after!!!! Cats see you eat food and then they want it. It may be cute but it isn't good for them. They don't need variety like we do, although it's hard for us to understand because we would hate to eat the same thing ALL the time. Little kitties tummies and intestines aren't built for all that people food so don't willingly give them people food. They do make a wet food that has rice mixed in for their digestive system...it's for indoor cats and it helps them go to the bathroom less and have less smelly bowl movements. Maybe your cat wanted to be constipated : P

My cat enjoys plain white rice too. Sometimes I'll add a little raw beef to it and then he really goes wild.
I don't know what cats require in their diets, but am glad to read that my cat isn't the only one eating what I consider a strange diet.

Cats are omnivores, they need much more than just meat in their diet. Look at any higher end cat food and you'll see rice, carrots, spinach, apples, etc in their ingredients.
My cat loves to eat dry oatmeal, spinach, wheat grass, and pumpkin.
