Daily we see the justification issue played out by both sides in an endless he said/she said tirade. It has reached the point where it is impossible to have a civilized discussion on the matter. If you support the war for whatever reason your opinion is unjustified to one side. If you are against the war for whatever reason it is unjustified to the other side. The point I am making is that it doesn't matter at this point whether we were justified or not. The fact is that we did invade and we have to proceed on that basis. What purpose is served by this constant sniping on the issue? The real questions at this point are, How are we going to get out of Iraq? and What will the majority of people consider an as acceptible outcome?

Satisfiedmom: I have not stated any position other than the fact that continuous discussion reagrding justification or lack thereof is pointless. The questions posed reflect the current debate, not my opinion one way or the other. Kindly retract the claws and stop trying to assign a position to me when you have no knowledge of what my position actually is. If you are curious about my stand on the war you can find ample information in my other questions and answers.

Just about all wars see major shifts in goals and tactics at some point making the original goals and tactics obsolete. If we leave Iraq tomorrow the result would be a major power struggle resulting in a winner. that winner will be the badest of the bunch and most likely hate the west. We will leave him the 2nd largest oil reserves in the world. He will spend that oil wealth on exporting terror with the best weapons money can buy. We are part of this world we better have a force there!!

The reasons still matter intensely. How a country slips, schemes or otherwise finds itself at war, and the conduct of it, hardly easily fall under any statute of limitations until all possible lessons have been extracted and absorbed.

What purpose? That purpose.

Where the reasons for invading Iraq now matter little is in the decisions that need to be made concerning the current situation. Playing "next time" or "if only" or the blame game doesn't help with these intractable problems.

The two issues are separate.

How are we going to get out of Iraq? Not for a long time, unless we leave an utter mess. Or unless some other peacekeeping force can be put together.
The Iraqi police/troops on their own are not adequate or reliable. But the nationality of the American and British troops is itself a provocation to some factions.

Good point. Can you get the policy makers to take this same angle? I agree that it doesn't matter if the choice was right or wrong. It is what it is and that is all it is. This also means stop making the comments about the administrations being criminal support our troops effort. I am not saying that citizens must agree with the admin. but all the lashing out gives comfort and moral victory to the terrorist. Keep the dirty laundry at home don't spread it world wide.. If you don't agree with the policies get rid of the policy makers via your vote. People say they support our troops and then bash the Commander in Chief, how is that support?

Saddam is out of power, there are no weapons of mass destruction, a government has been elected. It's time the Iraq's fight their own battles. Our people need to come home. Only a small force should be kept to train Iraq's. We need to leave. The only acceptable outcome is to have Iraq's take over now. If their people don't think the country is worth fighting for, it's a lost cause anyway.

The real reason that the justifications no longer matter is that they no longer exist and or have been refuted! Save George Bush's personal lunacy, the rational for deciding how and when the troops get out henges on what purpose is being served by being there in the first place!

Hence, if as you say the reasons truely no longer exist, then there is no reason to be there and the government should just say I'm sorry and pull the plug!

" There's another fine mess you've got yourself into Ollie! "

It matters because the politician's lies led to the deaths of thousands of innocent people and they should stand trial for that.
