Some Mormon missionaries informed me that I cannot be told why they wear the white bike-shorts all the time. They said that it is a holy thing and it cannot be shared with non-Mormons. Should all religions keep their holy business to themselves?

No and that is what separates religion and cults. If you look at any group that have secrets, rituals or a process that is kept secret, I would worry.

The Bible is a road map for people and groups, no matter what they call themselves, Baptists, Lutherans, Pentecostals or Nazarene, to follow. The only real flexibility is in church doctrine.

Many groups, Mormons, Witnesses, Masons, all have things they don't discuss in public so I always ask, " why"?

The whole reason that the Vail of the temple was rent from top to bottom when Jesus died, was to open the most Holy of Hollies to the people. It allowed man to go directly to God, instead of going thru the Chief Priest under Mosaic law.

Crack the Bible open, read it, and look at your local book store because there are a lot of supportive and informational books to help understand the bible more clearly.

That's weird that the missionaries would tell you that. I've talked to their missionaries many times and have never heard one say that.My sister and brother-in-law are Mormons and they have no problem with aswering questions about their beliefs including their strange under garments. I don't think people of any faith should throw their beliefs in yor face but, when asked, they should be able to answer any question someone might have. How else would non-believers get to know what they believe?

I'm a Protestant Christian, have been Episcopalian, Presbyterian, Baptist, Methodist and Lutheran. No secrets in those clubs - they would all consider secret bike shorts or secret handshakes or secret whatever against Jesus's teachings. He said "Love one another as I have loved you." And his injunction was to go and openly speak to all people about God's gift to them. Their were quite a few branches of early Christianity which had "secret" wisdom and which were finally deemed heretical. But if the point of religion is to bring people and God (by whatever name you know Him) together, then special, secret practices should be eschewed. Personally, I think some religions do this because they feel persecuted and the secretiveness helps them feel safer.

There is no universal "should" that applies to all religions or all people.

Often, there's no point in trying to discuss certain holy things with people who aren't in a position to understand them.

However, it is often possible to share some information that is at the right level for people who don't share one's beliefs. Perhaps those people will become curious enough to explore the religion more thoroughly and thereby enrich themselves and others.

They have been instructed to lie to outsiders and ones that are not ready to hear the full truth. What you got is one of the lies.
It isn't that holy or secret. IF they wanted to tell you, they could. I am not a Mormon and we have talked about Temple rites on a number of occasions.

They're scared that you'll abuse the information that they giive you, since non- mormons have nor proven they are loyal as they are to God. However, God should be shared with everyone because everyone needs and deserves to know God. Do they really wear those shorts?

If it is something holy to them, then yes, they should keep it to themselves - or it becomes NOT holy...right???
The Lord wants everyone to come to his house, the temple. BUT HE has set certain standards that those who attend must be living by...it is his house you know...also, no "unclean" thing can be in his presence, that would be part of the standards...

Mormon underwear aside, one should refrain from speaking of holy things in a mundane manner. If a discussion of holy things is taking place, one should conduct oneself with the proper decorum.
