when around your partner you should be able to talk about the first thing that comes to mind. This tests your compatibility to them as if they think you speak of sillyness / too seriousness you are not really going to last, even if you have mind blowing sex ten times a day. you have to find the balance where you become best friends. hope that wasnt to corny and hope i was of help. Try speaking about kids, do you want any? do they?

ask him what he thinks about pork barrel politics
or what is his position on you guys
how does he feel about baseball players using steroids
or the old classic
"who you got on the big game"
that;ll start a conversation pretty quick
but you have to remember to be able to speak knowledgably about whatever he says so if you don't know what he's talking about make something up

If you are already running out of ideas, then it's not good!
However, talk about things that you are passionate about and if he is the same and as passionate as you, you have something to build on!
