My dog is about 6 or 9 or something and I only started looking after him because he's my Nanna's but she had never even taken him for a walk once. He goes balistic when I pick up the lead he runs around jumping on everyone and he chairs. He did a backflip one time haha. But yeah I would have like to have taught him stuff like sit and roll over but the only thing he knows is his name.

You can teach an old dog new tricks. I rescued my Dachshund and she is somewhere in the vicinity of 10-12 years old. I've taught her several basic tricks. Like stay, kiss, sit pretty, and she takes to her leash well, even though I don't think she had ever seen one...lol. Clicker training works very well. Just give lots of praise when he shows interest and give a reward. A belly rub, a small treat, something he enjoys. Be persistant and consistant and he will learn.

Every dog has the vigor to be trained methods. If hes a healthy glad energetic dog that's great. That might support for him to do the tips. He just wishes to take a look at the methods and follow them. Keep him healthy, and make certain the tips are not too difficult working. Purpose i do not think puppies would rather like that. He is not lazy so that's excellent so he should be great. Incidentally 2 is not historical. Maintain him healthful! Hope this helped.

Yes!!!

Best to get some of that energy out before you start a training session. A good long walk will help him focus when you return.

Use a reward that he likes, tasty, smelly treats. He'll probably love the attention and challenge.

Good Luck!

I highly recommend researching clicker training! I have recently started trying this, and we use it in our Obedience Competition class and the results are AMAZING as to how quickly a dog "gets it"! I got a great book to get me started, "Clicking with your dog" by Peggy Tillman. A good starter book with illustrations and step by step guide on doing clicker training.

Of course he can learn new things. Undoing established behaviors will take awhile, but it won't take him any longer to learn new behaviors than it would a young dog. Find a training class near you (check www.apdt.com) that uses positive reinforcement and he'll learn a ton.

Yes, but it takes time & patience. All of my animals have been rescues.......some old, some young, most abused or neglected. Almost all will come around with a little time & affection.

Yes. I've adopted senior dogs and they've learned new things just fine.
