a few marines turned up in a chat room, since i hve never seen marines on active duty in iraq in chat rooms nor have the other chatters, they didn't believe them. so they got on cam, showing thier uniforms, rifles, helmets. but since i know quite a bot about the military i asked them to show me the bullet proof vest that all soldiers in iraq wear, they came out with an excuse that their cam dont work any more. were they real soldiers from iraq and if you could tell me if they are allowed to come on the net as i think its breaching military rules. one other thing, thier rifles were just to shiney very shiney does that mean anything ? so were they real soldiers serveing in iraq?

Most FOBs on Iraq have internet access and webcams allowed every place I've in in Iraq and Afghanistan and we were allowed to use them when we were on the FOB and off duty. Different units have different policies about IBA = individual body armor. In Iraq we wore ours 24-7 off the FOB but on the base we got out of them when ever we could. All Marines carry "rifles" the Army carries "weapons" and nobody uses a "gun" except artillery. As far as shiny finish on the weapons... could be oil after a cleaning. Although most should be showing some wear if they have been deployed for very long. The Marine uniforms aren't cheap, neither would a fake weapon. It would be a lot of expense just to go online and chat with. If there was more than one, which you indicated, I'd say there were the real deal and just not to bright. Something Marines have been accused of before. As for the person above asking for them to show their IDs. I would never show mine online.

Yes, active duty personnel in Iraq are allowed to be on the internet. Generally though they don't show off anything unless they know who they are talking to. If they are infantry men then they will either be wearing the body armor or they will have it on the rack. Being a mechanic I can tell you that yes, you do have to wear a vest but only at certain times, it is really hard to move like you need to as a mechanic with a vest on. I don't know what rifle they are claiming to be using but the standard issue is the
M-16, and that is all black. It is possible that they are serving in Iraq, but they knew they would have gotten in trouble for trying to show off all their gear over the internet, and since they had been shooting their mouths off they couldn't just come out and say I can't show you that. On the other hand they could be stationed somewhere else and just trying to get some attention. I have some Marine friends that are over there and they don't try and pull stunts like that.

Any member of the armed forces would not only have a flack jacket they would be wearing them if in uniform in Iraq. Or they'd be close to hand. As the rifles were so shiney I'd also doubt they were genuine. It is very difficult to keep a rifle clean in the conditions there! Off duty they could be on the net though. That isn't a breach of rules. It would be what they were saying that might be.
Genuine Marines never!!!

It's not a violation of any policy or breaching any OPSEC. We purchased a satellite internet and split the cost between a few of us for superfast internet access. There is no policy that you can't get on the net - some do it differently than others though. If you take photos / webcam of the base itself that is one thing...
As far as a cam not working - who knows. We had a cam that worked for less than two weeks... Like all the other crap AAFES sells overpriced to the troops.
Depends on the rifles - often times the bluing can wear off fast in the sand, picture can be distorted on a cam also.
Hard to say, chat rooms are full of idiots. I would have my doubts, but who knows.

AH US , SAY NO MORE, GUN HO ! AND BIG HEADED ! WHAT A SUPRISE, THAT IS SO UNUSUAL FOR AMERICAN SERVICE MAN, ESPECIALLY MARINES.
Are we talking UK or US? This refers to the UK, not the US!!!!
probably not, but who knows. Shiny weapons is not a real indicator. Plus if you know so much you would know that no one in the military calls their personal weapon a rifle.
They are not bullet proof vests, they are flak jackets too, some have armour plates added.
Why is it breaching military rules to go online?
To the above, it varies from place to place, flak jacket within 10-20m during the day, arms reach at night when sleeping, so most people just wear them.
To the below, they wont be on a rack, unless it is being watched by someone from their own core (trust), so if they have signed for their weapon and ammo, they will have it in arms reach too.
Does the US still have rifles not weapons, because they still think they need them for buffalo or indians?

Marines can be on the net, even in Iraq. They would not necessarily be wearing their armour in the barracks, that is only required when on patrol or depending on the base they are stationed at. But you are right, their rifles would not be shiney and they would not be carrying them around, they would be stowed in a rack while they were using the internet. You never know on the Net, that goes for everyone not just military.

It's possible that they were. Soldiers and Marines do have access to the web and very easily could have been on camera. They shinyness of their weapons doesn't tell you anything either because you don't know how long they have been there or where exactly they are stationed - there are some relatively comfy places to serve in Iraq (Baghdad Airport). Plus shiny compared to what? If they were silverish then no way.
So there really is no way to tell - sorry but I would guess no

I seriously doubt it. If your are in Iraq it is standard(this is Air Force now, an we are pretty lax, so the marines definitely do it) to wear your flack vest at ALL times, whether your in a tent or taking a poop. So I would say no. Oh, and shiney rifles?DEFINITELY NOT.

It could be a good possibility that they were soldiers... I served in the first gulf war, and had access to computers then...As for the shiney weapons..ohh yes it happens...the m-16a1 is made mostly of carbon fiber composites... when your in the desert you clean that thing all the time... after awhile with all the sand abrasions and cleaning that is done on them they do create a shine...
