Use the peroxide, dish soap (DAWN) and baking soda recipe that was given in a couple other posts. That is what I use in my grooming shop when I have a skunked dog. Careful around the eyes!..soak cotton balls, or paper towel and just wipe the face area.
No matter what you use, You will probably still smell a faint skunk odor when your dog gets wet. I have had some dogs come in, and when I bathe them, they still have a faint odor..even months later.
Tomato juice will just give you a red dog.

Hi there!
Sorry you have a skunk issue - I can relate totally!!
Here's the tried tested and trusted recipe we use at the clinic and home...
1qt Hydrogen Peroxide
1Cup Baking Soda
1Cup Dawn Dish Soap
(Double or reduce depending on size of dog - this works well for a 40# pup - I double the first 2 ingredients for my 75# pointer - keeping the dish soap the same - nothing but bubbles EVERYWHERE otherwise - teehee!!!)
Make a mixture of these ingredients, get the dog completely wet - avoiding eye area - rub mixture into coat, let it sit for at least 10 minutes, then wet the coat a little to create a good lather, then rinse very thoroughly. Allow dog to air dry, instead of using a drier or towels.
This works soooo much better than the old tomato juice mess, however it's really only time that will completely get rid of the odor! You may have to repeat the above a couple of times to bring the dog to an acceptable 'smell level' for you!!
We use this recipe all the time at work and at home - my nosey Pointer is forever getting hit by skunks or rolling in deer/fox/badger/you name it/poo..... ICK!!!
Good Luck :-)

Tomato juice DOES NOT WORK, it'll only turn a white dog pink!
Take some hydrogen peroxide and some baking soda, make a paste of it (watch it, it will fizz and bubble) and rub that into your dogs skin/hair, etc. Use gloves, or else you'll get the skunk stink on your hands, too! Dont get it in your dog's eyes. When you're done with the last spot, rinse it off, then use DAWN dishsoap (it will remove the last traces of the musky-oil from the skunk), rub that in really well (avoid the eyes) and then rinse it really well again.
That SHOULD do the trick. You might have to do it twice.

I have had this happen many times with my dog, and while tomato juice helps a little bit, really only time will make the smell fade, in my experience.
Nature's Miracle Skunk odor remover never worked for me, either. It did not get the smell completely out.

My old dog used to get skunked all the time.
We used to use a combo of water, liquid dish soap, baking soda and I believe hydrogen peroxide....
let me check for the details, i'll get back to you....
Edit, I tried the tomato juice remedy, (you know that you are supposed to let the tomato juice completely DRY before rinsig, right?) my dog had chow in hima nd plenty of fur for the smell to soak into. Tomato juice didn't do anything for him.
Still searching....my vet gave me the above mentioned receipe and it worked....BRB
Found the recipe at:
1 quart (or liter) of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide, H2O2.
Use fresh (unopened) hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Hydrogen peroxide eventually turns into water (H2O).
1/4 cup (50 ml.) of Baking Soda
1 teaspoon (5 ml.) of Liquid Soap
Hydrogen peroxide and baking soda, when combined, become a "chemical engine" for churning out oxygen. That's why it has to be used immediately after mixing. The soap breaks up the oils in the skunk spray, allowing the other ingredients to do their work.
Good luck!
