I have a Lab Pup that is 9 months old. He is not hiking his leg. I think they will learn over time. My dog is around other dogs too, why don't you get on all fours and teach him.... that's what i am thinking about doing. hahaha.

I have a 15 month old male that alternates between squatting & hiking his leg, & a 4 year old male who squats about one out of every 10 times. Usually when they get tired of peeing on their front feet, they will start hiking their leg more consistently.

Well sometimes it's heard to tell when a dog will start to hike it's leg. I have a dog that is about a year old and it hikes it's front leg. Are you sure it is a boy dog? It is probibly just a late bloomer.

He may never do it. Hiking is a sign of dominance and marking territory. I have a female that when she goes to the petstore so many dogs have marked the trash can she does too. She hikes and yes she is very dominant. When I take in a new foster, once I get her to stop trying to eat them, she will go behind and urinate on top of where they went. If it was a male that hiked she will to.

My dog didn't start until he was about 9 months old, and that was only after he started socializing with other dogs, he was able to imitate them (the first time he tried to hike his leg he fell over.. way cute!)

If he does this right after you take him outside, he's probably been holding it for too long and just goes as soon as he can without taking the time to raise his leg. I've seen that happen with dogs who are left at home all day while the owner is at work. By the time the owner gets home, the dog's baldder is about to burst.

I learned that male dogs learn the habit of hiking their legs by watching other, older male dogs. Maybe try taking him to a dog park? He might pick up the habit there. He needs to be in a place where he feels the need to "mark" his territory. That is supposedly when male dogs pick up this habit.

I'm assuming he's not fixed (which I hope you will consider). Labs are like kids until they're at least 3 so don't worry.
