well my husband has been in for 4 years and loves it! (he's 22) he's been all over the world, Malaysia, russia, turkey, afganistan, kergistan, guam, diego garcia, thailand, hawaii, the longest he's been deployed was for 4 months, if your single and in the Air Force your gonna have a GREAT time, my husband might have to go to iraq but stays on base, he's a mechanic for the C-17's (huge plane) he loves it (he's really good with that kind of stuff) but when you sign up just make sure YOU pick your job DON't let the Air Force pick it for you and make sure its written in your contract, lets say you wanted to be a nurse so you tell the recruiter you want to work in a hospital well you have to remember that even hospitals need janitors and you could be one for 4 years, just make sure you specific with your job, my husband is going to school too for computer engineering and the Air Force pays for everything but his books (not a bad deal) if you want to travel all over the world be a flying crew chief, you'll go everywhere! my husband is taking classes to be one now and will be making a ton of money while he flies! (thats why many guys and girls do it) we live in Charleston SC and haven't been stationed anywhere else yet (by choice) we will move in a couple of years out of country just for the experience! good luck!

Don't listen to that one guy, he's full of crap. The Air Force doesn't go to ANYONE's house! And even if for some reason they did, you go to MEPS to sign your papers! It's not like they came to his house and said they wouldn't leave until he signed the papers! Stupid. Anyways, my husband has been in for a year, I'm leaving for basic in January and I'm not worried about it. Right now, most of the AF deployments are voluntary and if you go you'll be gone for 2-4 months, your choice, it's really not that bad at all! Don't think that I'm saying it's cake or anything, it's still the military and there is still going to be some "politics" but that's everywhere, so. Basically, it's a job, you work your shift (generally 8 hrs unless you do security forces) and then you go home and it's your time to fill as you choose. The base has a lot of free junk and it's a good way to get your college done (100% tuition assistance and then when you get out you have your G.I. bill) It's not for everybody, but it's steady work and free college, and you are protecting your country. It's really a positive thing to do with your life, especially if you aren't sure what you want to do.

First of all, good for you for wanting to serve your country!
You will not go wrong joining the Air Force. As has been stated on here already, you should take the ASVAB test & see what kind of scores you get, & go talk to a recruiter. The kinds of jobs available will depend on whether your training is in operating, programming, or maintaining computers. Anything related to computers is in demand right now. Delayed enlistment is a good idea, because you can wait for a job you want, then "lock it in" so that it will be waiting for you when you graduate. I enlisted in November of my senior year, and went active duty 2 months after graduation. The other nice thing about that is that during the time between enlistment & actually going on active duty, you are acruing time toward your total enlistment committment. This gets you stripes earlier, & shortens your "inactive reserve" time at the end of your active duty stint.
Just one word of advice on the down side; Whatever the recruiter promises you, make sure that it ends up in writing. When they say "travel the world", remember that Iraq is part of that world. They are, after all, salesmen, & have quotas to meet. My recruiter was straight up with me on everything, but you just want to CYA.
Good luck!

There are many technical fields you could go into. My husband is in communications as a Ground Radio Tech. They have a lot of different things to choose from, but what job you get all depends on your ASVAB scores and job availability. My husband went in on delayed enlistment and waited almost a year for job field to oepn up.

I agree you need to decide if you want to go Enlisted or Commissioned. To be an Officer you will need to complete your degree before enlistment. Talk to a recruiter about your options for either choice. I know there are programs to help you pay for school either way.

Good luck on your decision!

First decide if you want to go Enlisted (more technical) or Officer (college programs). Then find an area that you are interested in! Check out this website....when your school offers the ASVAB make sure you take it and do well. Your test results will determine which jobs you qualify for. I would strongly recommend exploring different officer programs, kind of hard to get into the acadmy, but there are other ways. ROTC?

Oh my god Katrina, what in hells earth Air Force did he join??? I have been in the US Air Force for 14 years. This has been THE greatest job I have ever had, and I have had a few. And YES the Air Force pays for a S__TLOAD of school. first 38K in Montgomery GI Bill(If he was smart enough to sign up for it) and Tution Assistance on EVERY college program, which pays 75% of all tuition, hell there are even some courses which are 100% paid just as long as you maintain and pass it with a 70% average. I seriously am doubting your story anyway, Loading bombs on Air Force helicopter??? My dear, the only Helicopters the Air Force has are combat search and rescue helicopters, which only have GUNS, no bombs.

They will crucify you. My nephew Steve, has been there for three years. And wishes he was dead. The people came to his house. When he graduated from high school. They lied to him so that he would sign the papers. Because being in the air force is so great. They said.He only went to get a education. But it is not free.the goverment won't pay for it. He builds bombs and puts them in helecopters. The people he works with our scuzy and sleazy and garbage. Steve has been to Iraq at least 4 times already.Last time he had to stay 4 or 5 months. He says that he wished he would have died in Iraq. He hates his mom and dad, because he blames them for pushing a seventeen year old boy into the military. He wasn't evan 18 yet.

Just remember it is no picnic. Just horrible things. His parents didn't want to pay for his schooling. He has 20 months left.He might come home in a box. Wait until the goverment forces you to go. Not now. You can get a good job here in U.S. if your good with the computer.Well I don't mean to be doom. So have a happy thanksgiving!

there are a lot of technical jobs, but you can always talk to a recruiter or you can also go to the navy website and find out.
