The actual time you are allowed to stay in the US will be decided upon entry and entered on your I-94 entry card. The maximum entry is 1 year and 6 months is the default, but they can make it any length shorter than that.

From the State Dept. website:
"Each time you arrive at the port-of-entry, a U.S immigration officer decides whether to allow you to enter and how long you can stay. Only the U.S. immigration officer has the authority to permit you to enter the United States."

That is decided on your entry. The immigration official at your port of entry will stamp your passport with a date before which you will have to leave the country or get an extension to stay.
