Oh boy, do I sympathise with your predicament. I'm a few years older than 19 ...18 to be exact, but still have many of the problems you describe.
You don't actually say that you suffer from shyness, although I'm sure this is a factor in your problems. I've spent most of my life avoiding social situations, and believe me, it's NOT the answer. It's the very reason I'm still such a social leper.
Not wishing to sound hypocriteical here, but you really must try to overcome your fears by facing them directly. Join a confidence building class, please. You'll be so surprised at how quickly you can get over this.
Good luck!

Get him to go see a Chiropractor or Osteopathic manual practitioner. These people are the experts in muskuloskeletal problems. All you'll get from an MD are pain killers and a requisition for physiotherapy which is run by the mainstream (a lot of those offices are owned and run by doctors). I know tons of people who were in your boyfriend's situation who followed the conventional route, got fed up and went to a Chiropractor. They walked out after one visit like nothing had ever happened to them. No kidding. Nobody who knows better bothers with conventional medical advice when it comes to sciatica or related problems: their track record stinks.

We all feel that way. Everyone is very anxious about social situations and what other people might think of them. It is just that few of us are honest about it. So when we look around we see people (who inside are as nervous as us) acting like they are cool as ice and don't have a care. This makes us feel like their must be something wrong with us because we sure don't feel like they seem to. But the key is to remember that that is just the front that people put on. Everybody has to learn how to be at ease in a group. And it is always a little hard with a new group even when you have a lot of practice. The main thing is just to go and try. There is nothing wrong with starting out being the quiet type. You can get a long way in the world by smiling and nodding at people. It will be hard at first but make yourself do it and try to remember that they are just as nervous as you are.

You might have Social Anxiety Disorder.
It's normal to be a bit nervous about social situations and how your are perceived. Everyone changes their behavior to a degree when they will be around people. You have to. Some things you do in private are not things you do in public. But if you think it is severely affecting your behavior (like you avoid doing things you want simply because you are afraid/nervous about being around other people), then you should consult your doctor.

Ask your doctor about an exercise routine. Regular exercise, such as walking three times a week, may reduce neuropathy pain, improve your muscle strength and help control blood sugar levels. Gentle routines such as yoga and tai chi might also help.

I have the same problem. There are anti-anxiety medicines out there that can help. I tried a couple...but I didn't like the side effects. I am just trying to overcome it on my own now. You should talk to your doctor about it.
