The Catholic Church teaches that when Christ placed Peter at the head of the Twelve, the first bishops..
The Lord made Simon alone, whom he named Peter, the "rock" of his Church. He gave him the keys of his Church and instituted him shepherd of the whole flock.
The Pope, Peter's successor, is the perpetual and visible source and foundation of the unity both of the bishops and of the whole company of the faithful.
For the Pope, by reason of his office as Vicar of Christ, and as pastor of the entire Church has full, supreme, and universal power over the whole Church, a power which he can always exercise unhindered.
The Pope’s main roles include teaching, sanctifying, and governing.
With love in Christ.

The Pope is known throughout the Roman Catholic world as the successor to St. Peter in governing God's church. For more information, you can use wikipedia or search "Vatican" on google or yahoo. That'll probably tell you what you need to know.

The pope can appoint bishops, create dioceses or make an infallible pronouncement in "matters of faith and morals". The pope also creates cardinals, names saints and intervenes in disputes between the Vatican and local bishops.
God bless,

He does a lot of sweeping.... Like sweeping evidence of priests molesting boys under the carpet... Oh, and he is also known for making great threats...The current pope is the guy who wrote a document (can t recall the name of it right now) regarding how allegations of child sexual abuse should be handled - and he suggested that the child be discouraged from reporting it, and that any priest who spoke of it faced excommunication.
Some pope, huh?
