If you want to find somewhere cheap, you best bet is to stay on the West Bank. It is only minutes from Down Town area. Any where you stay down town is going to be pricey, esp. during during Mardi Gras.

Anything within 50 miles of New Orleans will be pricey but check out the surrounding areas for the best bets. You can look into Slidell, Metairie, Kenner, or the Westbank. Depending on your thoughts on driving & what area you are coming from you could even look at Covington & Mandeville or Picayune, MS. All of those places would be about 45mins - 1hr drive.

As for actually in New Orleans city limits, I am not sure what has reopened now & what hasn't. I stayed at the Iberville Suites before & they were really nice & walking distance from Bourbon Street. However, they weren't what I consider cheap & I am not sure if they are open now or not. Have you visited NOLA.com? That sight has a step by step planning guide for Mardi Gras & it may be of some assistance to you.
