multipurpose cleaner (it's better to have two that way you juggle it from the 2 areas)
air freshener or if you're tight in money a box of matches will do
a scouring pad to clean the sink and the shower or tub.
there are a lot of things that you can buy but make sure before some things take a step back and ask if you really need it.
always make a list before going shopping that way you will be focused on the things on the list. if you're tight on budget stick to the list.
if you think you have the basics then you can start another list of what you want. :)

Think of how many people are going to live in the apartment. Just you? Then you don't need soup, salad, and serving plates. You need a plate. Plates are usually sold in sets of 4, along with saucers, and cups, so that's all you need for that, for the moment.
What are you going to cook in? Pots and pans I mean. You don't need a set, just two or three of different sizes will work and a skillet. All the extras can come a little later. Microwaves are nice if you can work them into the budget, but are not a necessity of life.
You'll need dish washing soap, dish towels, an oven mitt or two, I'd get two just in case, and a sponge or dish cloth for washing dishes. Maybe a baking pan of some kind, but avoid the cookie sheets for the moment. You'll want something along the lines of a 2 qt casserole dish or a 9"X9" pan. (Good for chicken helper). You can buy sets of utensils at the local Marts that will have just about everything you need in that line. And of course a kitchen table and chairs.
You'll want a multi-purpose cleaner, Windex is good for that. Cleans windows, counters, stove tops, and appliance tops and wall tiles and mirrors.
For the bathroom, I'll not go into the personal hygiene stuff, you know what you need there. But at least one bath towel, wash cloth and face towel. Preferable, get at least two of each so you can have one to use while the other is being washed. And some cleaner for that room, Scrubbing Bubbles is good, or the generic is good also, and get some Comet or Ajax for the hard to clean things. Some times Comet will take things out of the toilet bowl better than Bubbles will.
For the living room, a couch, TV, a stereo and some thing to put them on. I used concrete blocks and 2X4's for the first 6 months. It didn't look pretty, but it worked until I could get normal shelving for them. And a blanket, I use a full size one for mine even today I use it, for the couch to protect from little spills, you can throw it in the washer and put it back on when it's dry. A coffee table would be nice, and an end table, but not really necessary in life at the moment.
For the bedroom, what more do you really need other than a bed and a dresser? Well, bed clothes of course, and get two sets so one can be in the wash and the other on the bed. And pillows and cases for them.
Washer and dryer are nice but they make laundromats too or mom's house is always good for that and she'll like seeing you once a week so she can chat with you.
Buy the furniture and appliances at a second hand store, you'd be surprised at the cheaper prices and they'll be good for the moment. Shop for everything else at Dollar General, or Wal-Mart or other discount houses. Don't for 'lots of' or the proper dishes to have when you serve soup, just go for the basics for now and the rest of it will come in due time.
You can easily drop $800 for just the basic items and amounts that I've listed, and then add the furniture cost to that. About another $600-$800.
You may want to see if some one, friend or family, has some of the furniture that you can borrow at first. I did the "Early American Borrowed" until I could get my own stuff and it worked out well.
Good Luck in your new place!!!

Unfortunately, you're going to need a TON of stuff. Here are some things I can think of off the top of my head:
1. Kitchen
-dishes (plates, bowls, glasses)
-silverware (forks, spoons, knives)
-can opener
-dish drying rack
-large mixing bowls and salad bowls
-knives for cutting fruit, bread, meat, etc.
-table and chairs
-paper towls
-water purifier (I have a Brita filter that I keep in the fridge)
-microwave
-pots and pans
-spoons, spatulas, and such to cook with
-dishtowels, scrubbies, dishsoap
-measuring cup/spoons
-collander
2. Living Room
-TV
-TV stand
-light
3. Bedroom
-nightstand
-hangers
-dresser
-light
-sheets
-blankets
4. Bathroom
-shampoo, soap, lotion, toothpaste
-toilet paper
-shower curtain (if you need one for your type of shower)
-shower caddy
-towels, hand towels
5. Health and Safety
-fire extinguisher
-vitamins
-painkillers (such as Tylenol)
6. Miscellaneous
-doormat
-desk and chair
-cleaning supplies
-telephone
-laundry basket
-laundry soap
-bookshelf
Of course, this isn't even close to everything you'll need. I've moved into a couple different apartments, and both times I had to spend so much money in the beginning just to get the necessities. After a month or two, you'll be all settled in. Good luck with your move, and enjoy your freedom!

All above are wonderful suggestions, but the most important thing you could possibly have is a washer and dryer if you have the availability to a hook up in your apartment. It is one of those things that people do not really think about because you usually have a local laundrymat or a laundry facility on the apartment cite, but that $2.00 per load will cost a whole lot more than the initial purchase of a washer and dryer - which you can get great bargains on this time of year! Not to mention all the time you will save if you can just do laundry in your own home rather than have to go somewhere!
Good luck with you first place - it is a wonderful thing.

RE:
I'm moving into my 1st apartment, what are some home necessities that I should buy first?
I'm starting fresh w/out any furniture, appliances, utensils, nothing! I've gotta get it all! Besides an obvious bed and couch what are some things you recommend I get first to hold me over...kitchen stuff especially.

For the kitchen you need a microwave if the apartment doesn't come with one, plates and utensils, ice trays, oven mitt, and pots and pans later you can worry about cookie sheets and the little things..
For the living room you just need a blanket for the couch and a TV of course.
Then in the bedroom you just really need one of those plastic drawer sets that has wheels and some warm blankets for the bed .
You can get a set for the bathroom at walmart or kmart for cheap that has everything you need for the bathroom and don't forget a shower curtin or liner. I was poor so I got a liner.

The big stuff in this order: Bed Table with one or two chairs Desk Dresser Couch TV and TV stand Couch is honestly one of the last things to get. Don't go into debt buying new furniture but don't use used furniture. A few dishes are important. I wouldn't run out and get a complete set, but get three of plates, cups, silverware, and bowels. Get two sizes of saucepans, one cookie sheet, and one or two skillets. Get wash clothes for dishes, soap, and some basic staples of food. Also get bathroom supplies and at two sets of towels. Get two sheet sets. A bunch of hangers, especially if you have a closet. If you have a small apartment, you can get a smaller vacuum for cheaper. Paper towels too. A laundry basket or a laundry bag to take your clothes to get it washed.

OK- If you are on a budget then your new best friend is the dollar store! Utensils, towels, bedding&sheets, curtins,(glass&plastic)cups, plates, bowels, really anything. Now just because its from the dollar store dosent mean its crap. The one I use here actually has name brand stuff. If you look you can find some greats things for a great price.
Now as for furniture-your local salvation army should have furniture, and belive it or not you can find some really great buys there too.Check out local garrage sales because they can be filled with great finds.Don't feel bad if your buying somthing pre-used as long as its not in bad shape, bring it home, clean it and enjoy!Oh and one more tip-if you have the time to check out e-bay they have everything your looking for!Good LUCK!
