Taekwondo is a martial art because it is an art of fighting. The same as boxing and fencing are considered martial arts. And yes it is flashy...
Now to put a few other posts straight i.e Hood_12 the moron...
Taekwondo is not meant to 'train in reality'. Generally Taekwondo is to show off and be flashy. That is why it has been a demonstration ONLY in the Olympic games until just a few years ago.
Don't even try to say that doing Ju Jitsu is any different when it comes to a compliant opponent. If anything, Ju Jitsu is worse. Ever tried to throw someone while they are resisting? Much harder than you know. Same goes for Judo and Aikido. When you train with a partner, you are training together, not against each other trying to be a tough guy.
Not all schools have a contract that needs to be signed. I've been practicing and teaching martial arts for quite a while and I have NEVER had to sign a contract.
Schedule for black belt? Rubbish! It should take a minimum of five years to attain your 1st degree black belt. There are very strict rules in most Taekwondo schools. I suggest you get your facts straight before posting this crap all over the place. Just because you studied under a bad instructor/school, it doesn't mean Taekwondo is worthless.
I have seen hundreds of students fail gradings. I guess your instructor was just after your money and didn't really care what his/her students got out of the class (if anything).
Sparring is usually semi contact in Taekwondo. It requires greater control than full contact. FOR COMPETITIONS you practice to score points, the same in all competitive sports including Ju Jitsu, Judo etc etc.
Warm ups for 30 minutes sounds about right. You MUST stretch and warm up properly before attempting high kicks. I seen people CRIPPLED because they didn't warm up properly. The hamstrings are usually the first to go. As competitive Taekwondo is for points, you need to be fast. That’s why you do speed drills etc. READ CAREFULLY - YOU NEED TO BE FAST!!
Personally I don't think anyone under 16 should have a black belt. This is only my opinion tho. I don't know what kind of Mickey Mouse school you went to but I've NEVER seen an 8 year old black belt.
You want to see reality? Look at REAL KNIFE DEFENCE and see what it leads to. I have known EXPERT martial artists who have lost their life to people with knives. No amount of training can prepare you for what is on the street. Violence is real ugly.
You sound like the kind of guy who trained for ages and never achieved anything, probably got your *** kicked by the 8 year old black belt.
See this video for something that you might class as REAL.

Tae Kwon Do is in fact a very effective Martial Art, but it often utilizes often unorthodox kicks, but when used properly and with enough time and experience you can achieve a decent amount of proficiency.
the reason it's considered "flashy" is due to many of the application of it's techniques, and the fact that it'd been inducted into the Olympics as a sport hasn't helped the stigma that has pervaded it in more recent years.
But yeah it is a Martial Art, and is also a proficient discipline of self defense.
You fight how you train, if you train poorly, you'll be a poor Martial Artist no matter what discipline you study, if you train hard and train well, then you'll fair well when the need to use what you learn comes up.
so it's all up to the individual, and their training ethics that decides how good of a Martial Artist they will become, because Martial Arts is a lifelong process of continuous learning, even after achieving a blackbelt rank and beyond.

Hood_12 you should consider a career as anti-tkd spokesman :-) Your answer crack me up big time, especially the tap dance fight part.
Oh and btw, JA2 is a comedian "TKD is a fighting art" was the funniest quote of day. May it was back in old day but not today.
Yupa, are you kidding? TKD kick powerful? Yeah right! Everyone who really know martial arts know Muay Thai is king of kick.
My opinion on TKD is, 95% of school should be shut down. They are making martial arts look bad. They give people wrong impression of martial arts. Most of techniques they use are outdate and leave themselve in really bad spot.
As for the question, TKD is a flashy excrise/gymnastic/dance. You shouldn't take them seriously as a fight art. The reason so many people here like to lick TKD nuts is because TKD is most commericalize and common martial arts out there. So read carefully and see who make more sense.

It really does depend on the school. Some TKD schools teach only the "cool" stuff. Some TKD schools suck, that's why we end up with a ton of TKD haters. It is definantly a martial art, and a good one at that. Some people just don't like it, that's okay. It's not like we are trying to make every person who does a martial art do TKD. The fact still reamains, Tae Kwon Do is a awesome Martial Art. And, there are alot of other awesome Martial Arts.

it is a joke. All you TKD nutriders will thumbs down me, but that is as close to winning as you will ever get . open your bloody eyes.
it is limited.
therefore it is not effective. when something is effective it is applied to that which has the power to, or which actually does, produce an effect. if you are told that you can beat people in street fights you have been decieved, people dont head kick in the street, people dont fight like TKD in the street. if you believe they do you have been fully anal-probed with TKD dribble and are a victim in waiting.
thumbs up to the TKD peeps that can see its limitations, even if you stay, its all good, as long as you know that it is a sport, not a special forces mystical weapon. Do they tell you that your beloved TKD is used by the army in Korea? well I will tell you something else, they use guns and tanks first. if it comes down to hand to hand, the war is lost already. it has no proven ability in war beyond anecdotal wet dreams from sycophant hungry instructors.
remember folks, jesus walked on water too... riiiiiight. propaganda
saying that it is valid because it is an olympic sport is laughable. the word SPORT was a dead give away of its aims.
TKD is the basics, and stays there. other martial arts use these techniques as a base for instruction, while TKD keep you there. it may be competent, but it is not exceptional.
why would people eat junk food when good food is the same price? dont know, perhaps they are safer with the junk as it is easy!

Tae Kwon-Do is a Korean Martial Art with a two thousand year history. Originally it was a fighting skill used for self defence. Over the centuries it has evolved into an art, and a sport or excercise.

People run Tae Kwon Do down but it is a hard martial art to learn. Only those who are serious should learn it however, on it's own I don't see best. This is why I like styles such as Hapkido which combines the forms of TKD and Aikido like movements.
I learnt TKD at school which had its fair share of violence amongst the bullies. Only TKD saved my backside as talking did nothing. Knowing TKD, using it on them made them stay away from me.

This depends entirely on the individual school and not the style as a whole.
I have seen a lot more bad schools for TKD than good ones, that is for sure.

TKD is a martial art that emphasizes powerful kicks. It is very effective when taught properly. As with anything else, there are people teaching it who aren't qualified. There are also differences among TKD organizations. Some teach Olympic style, which does emphasize speed over power. That is not the style I teach. The key is in finding the right school.

nope not at all its very effective indeed as long as your good with your legs .... i would say Thai boxing is the best though as its the nearest you will get to a street fighter , plus they train full contact so its not a shock to the system when you get a dig from Jo public ...unlike karate lads who just not used to getting hit , hence they fall over ...just look at the thumbs down on here to this question ....TKD is a respected sport and one of the best although not my favorite ... just shows you how many people dont have a clue in here about arts ... you choose what suits you and also this is 99% for sure the instructor there is good and bad in any discipline
