My "TOY" chihuahua is about to give birth. She is HUGE! Can anyone tell me how many puppies does a chihuahua USUALLY have in it's first litter?

Usually 2, 3 at the most, Mine gave birth to 2 of them, but she wasn't really big, Was your chi bred to a bigger dog? Because if she was she will need a c-section, If you breed a chi to a bigger breed they have problems whelping, puppy can get stuck in birth canal killing mother and the rest of pups that might still be in there. You have to know what to do if something like this may happen, Here are some web sights that helped me alot when My chi was pregnant, and whelped. My chi's 1st pup was born feet 1st to. I saw one foot, and it kept going back in, finally both feet poped out and I grabed them with a towel and held it that way everytime she would push it would come out more instead of going back in. I didn't pull on it because pulling may break the legs. well here's the sites it explains everything, Good Luck hope all goes well for her!

Since they are a small breed the litter will be such. On average the litter will be 2-3 pups. You need to be very careful though because sometimes the breed may need assistance with the birthing process. This can be costly in vet fees.

Maybe two, but sometime only one and the one puppy is so big because it got all the nutrution when growing. Please watch for signs of distress in your dog. You will be able to see contractions. Labor breathing, vaginal discharge it will be green if she has a steady flow of discharge and no puppy get to the VET asap. I always worry about the little toy breeds, they don't always do so well especially if there is only one puppy.

Chihuahua Lady where are you! That's who you need to answer your question, she on here, I just don't know where.

Hope this link helps.
