Some self supporting states like Nevada don't charge tax because they make it up in yearly revenue.

it's based on the county and the state. Some states dont tax food items, however they do tax pre-pared food items. It's to help families not have to pay tax on food to help sustain their families. Their feeling is if you can spend the money for the premade items or fast food, then they are going to tax them, but if you are going to cook from scratch then you shouldnt have to pay tax on that. Some states do tax all items. here in Georgia, you only pay tax on housewares and no food and no pre pared items in the grocery store.
