Don't they realize it's rude, not to mention they make an incredible amount of unnecessary noise by doing it.

Some people have a hard time breathing through their nose or are completely unable to. Others do it when they ravenously hungry and in some cultures, it's considered rude not to make "yummy noises". As a person who comes from a family where not making yummy noises means that the food is not good, I tend to eat like that. I get very offended when people make a big deal of it and feel that they should keep their attention to their own food. (Got in a big argument with my woman hitler, I mean, mother-in-law over this. Then again, she screamed at the top of her lungs at me in a crowded restaurant, which was much ruder.)

There is a polite way to bring it to their attention, but you must remain tactful or it will turn ugly very quickly. First of all, don't mention it in public! Stay cheerful and polite; smile at the person while you're talking to them and let them know that you're only doing this because you care about them. Make sure it's not a medical problem or a cultural issue, or you may find your foot in your mouth.

I know this sounds horrible but my friend does this and I've never understood how she even gets men to date her. What's even worse, is that she is in charge of fundraising, so she sponsers and attends galas and dinners.

She wants to go to lunch once a month, and I can't stand to eat a meal with her. It's not only she chews with her mouth open, she smacks when she chews. G-D help her.

I don't think they even realize they are doing it honestly, it was something they did from the time they were little that their parents didn't correct for one reason or another.

What I also find odd is when someone has always closed their mouths when they chew stop. My mother always tought me good table manners, but the past 2 years, she's been doing the same thing, AND blowing her nose at the table. I wonder if it also happens with age?

I also think its very rude and its grose not to mention... Like i see if someone has a cold or a problem with there nose and can not breath but other people there is no reason for it and i find it very rude... Another thing tho i work for a call center and when people call in and eating on the phone there is nothing worse then hearing them chew with there mouth's open while trying to talk at the same time ooooo my it makes me so0o angry like just hanning up the phone lol but yeah the only reason i think people should chew with there mouth open is if they can't breath..

Some poor people are unable to breath through their noses and hence cannot shut their mouths when eating. Try to feel compassion for them rather than anger, it's not their fault and they probably feel bad about it as it is.
Make a conscious effort not to look at their mouth but their eyes when they eat infront of you.

Well I have 2 cosins that chomp there food just like there Dad. They got it from him. My Aunt ignores her children chomping. It partly drives me up the wall.
So I would say it's the parents who influence them.
Then theres the people who have colds and can't breathe. I'm fine with them eating a little bit open so they can breathe.

Perhaps they are helping other with their diets. Seeing a mouth full of semi-chewed food will surely lose a person's appetite.
I'm getting grossed out thinking about it.
You're right. It's rude.

When my sibs and I were kids, anytime we chewed with our mouths open, my mom would smack our mouths with the back of her hands. We were taught to NOT chew with our mouths open. Thank goodness I still chew w/my mouth closed. So, really it is about the parents.

It's a matter of early childhood learning. What kids see their parents do , they do the same, and the vicious cycle goes on.

theres no way not to have feelings not hurt because yours are ... I think you should just say it.. mabye start making throw up sounds and when they look at you like your the fool "say and point to your mouth while still gagging and say the food in your mouth feels like its in my mouth" :)

Its an unfortunate by-product of growing up in an environment where manners were not stressed
