Yes.

Catholics have been meditating for almost 2,000 years.

Mediation as prayer is encouraged by the Catholic Church.

For Catholics meditation is a quest to understand the why and how of the Christian life, in order to adhere and respond to what the Lord is asking.

One way this is done is by reading scripture, asking God to give you understanding of it, and then pondering it in your heart.

Here is the Pope promoting meditation on the Scriptures: http://www.catholic.net/global_catholic_news/template_news.phtml?news_id=76678&channel_id=2

With love in Christ.

If we consider the fact, ma'am, that meditation is bringing our thoughts to a focus on the Truth, by freeing it from the trammeling of mundane thought, then it would appear to be close to prayer.

I'm not too sure that we can say that Prayer is a "Conversation with God", ma'am, like our erudite colleagues have said; because I remember "Prayer" to mean a supplication and a call for help. Conversation is, usually, between two equals and I'm not too sure if I, at least, can claim to be Gods equal.

Have a nice day.

Good afternoon to you! To me meditation has more of an effect on myself than prayer ever did. So I would have to say no. But that is just me.

Not that all forms of meditation are equivalent, but historically speaking, meditation has been a form of practiced prayer for quite a long time in Christianity, particularly true for Catholic.

Is it afternoon already?! Yes to me meditation is a type of prayer because when I empty my mind, my Divine link starts to send messages. Big loud ones!

No, when I meditate, I am not aware of anything except concentrating on my breathing. Prayer is my way to communicate To the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and I am very aware of what I am thinking.

Not really. People meditate in order to focus their own energy and to relax themselves. Prayer is a conversation with God. No matter what religion you practice, when you pray it is assumed that you are talking to God. However, when you meditate you are basically talking to yourself. That just what i think.

No, to me it is relaxation and an attempt to be "in touch" with the energy that connects all living things. But, I don't meditate much lately.

I don't use meditation as a form of praying. I use it as a form of focus. Rituals are more like praying.

Blessed be!

No. Meditation is an emptying of the mind. To pray you have to talk to God.
