You can definitely get an impressive ring for under 10k...although an even more impressive one will cost over 10k. My advice is to stick with something around .95-.98 carats because once you hit the 1.0 carat mark, the price WILL skyrocket. Go to www.bluenile.com and take a look at their diamonds and settings...it is a great way to compare with what you see in jewelry stores. Find a jeweler that you trust!! Go in and act stupid...if they take the time to explain things to you (specifically the 4 C's) and don't try to push a sale on you, chances are you've found a winner. You've found an even better person who is willing to within your budget and won't steer you towards something you can't afford.

How much does a nice engagement ring cost?
The best place to buy an Engagement Ring online is at Amazon.com which has a truly massive selection at incredibly low prices from a seller you can trust to deliver.

When a couple is ready to purchase an engagement ring, they should first establish a budget, determine which ring style they prefer, and learn how to select a diamond.
Conventional wisdom says to spend about two months salary on a diamond engagement ring. Remember, the ring recipient will wear the engagement ring every day.
When searching for engagement rings, couples should be aware of all available options before making a purchase. They should learn about the different types and values of engagement rings, diamond grading terminology and abbreviations, how to size a ring, and how to pick the best diamond for a loved one.
If you want to know more about buying Diamonds and what the 4 C's (cut, color, clarity and carat) mean then check their fantastic Jewelry Buying Guides out at:

It all depends on what you are looking for and what your budget is. We were on a tight budget and my e-ring cost $100 (down from $300) but it was exactly what I wanted. I picked it out, even though I was told we could find a way to get a diamond, etc. The ring was perfect for me and I've gotten a million compliments on it.
Once we hit five years of marriage or so we will "upgrade" to something better, but I wouldn't trade my ring for anything right now. If you can afford $10k, spend it I guess, but if not, go with what you can afford. Remember, you are starting a life together and don't want to spend the next 20 years paying off a ring and a wedding when you could have a house, family, etc.

First of all if she loves you, whatever you give her should be just fine..it's the reason you are giving her the ring that's special. Having said that, you should see what kind of ring she likes, she may like an oval cut and you purchase an emerald cut, etc. Take her ring shopping to see what she likes. You may go out and *think* she wants a nice 1 carat diamond but she may think it's gaudy (I tried one on and I think it looks ugly) so first see the style of ring she likes. Personally around 1/2 carat is nice, that's what my engagement ring is, and you can purchase a nice 1/2 carat ring anywhere from $1500-$5000 depending on the clarity. Most people don't understand clarity anyways...buy what you can afford without putting yourself into debt.

Each woman is different. It all depends on what she will find impressive. I have very small fingers (size 4) and was very uncomfortable in anything more than a quarter carat. I LOVE my ring.
I would suggest, however, if you're going to put that much money into the ring...make it special. Have a local jeweler custom build one for you. That's what my fiance did, and it's why I love my ring so much. It's unique! Don't get a cookie cutter ring from a chain like Kay or even online at Blue Nile. Never buy a ring you haven't seen and touched!
Good luck.

RE:

I want to buy my girlfriend an engagement ring that is nice and will make her friends ooh and aah but don't have unlimited funds. I know the 2 month salary rule..blah, blah, blah. I want to know the approximate dollar amount for an impressive-sized ring with good clarity that wont cost me arm...

I think 1 carat is a bit gaudy, if you ask me. I got my wife a .55 carat ring, but I made sure the stone was a very high quality one, with great color and clarity. There were some 1 carat stones that were the same price as the one I bought, but they weren't nearly as nice. Buy quality, my friend!
By the way, I paid a mere $2000 for that ring, and my (now) wife was THRILLED with it.
PSS. On our 5th anniversary, I took her ring and had the stone remounted into a new 3-stone ring, with a slightly smaller stone on each side of it, but of equal quality. She loves it even more now.

it is best to shop around, i would stay clear of on line brokers, I have not heard good things about them. I have a 1 1/2 18kt white gold set that cost about $4000.00 That size is more than what I hoped for. For 10k that should be quite sufficient. I think you can find something that is very nice for under that amount.
and in the end if you marry the love of your life, it really doesn't not matter what is on your hand, but what is in your heart.
