You are constipated as well as having hard stools. You need to increase your liquid intake and eat more fresh fruits and veggies as well as other high fiber foods. Go to the store and pick up some colace aka docusate to help soften your stools and a fiber supplement such as metamucil, citrucel or benefiber. Do NOT strain on the toilet as this can cause hemorrhoids.

Normally this can be traced back to your diet. You probably do not eat enough complex carbohydrates, fibers. If you start eating only whole grain products instead of white flour products and a lot of veggies and fruit instead of meaty things then you will get soft stool and regularly easy bowel movement.

In addition regular exercise is really helpful.

Now - to help you out in the short term you should start eating some Psyllium, a very efficient fiber. Metamucil contains lots of it, try that to get started and then change your diet.

If however you eat already a healthy diet (mostly veggies and fruit, meat only once or twice a week, lots of whole grain products) and you have the problems despite that then there may be a more serious problem and you need to see your doctor right away. Especially if this is not normal for you and just came up recently.

My daughter suffered the same thing. Our doctor advised it was a spastic colon and recommended fiber. Shackley offers an orange flavored wafer chewed before meals. They really helped.

Your constipated, take a laxative. You need to eat enough fiber to avoid this situation.
