earlier today ( maybe 20 30 min. ago) a bird i had never seen before flew against my window and was pertching on the screen. i took a few pictures. i tried to get a picture of its back but it flew away when i tried to open the other window. it's probably one thats been identified before i've just never seen it before ( i live in North Texas, but just outside the city...so country i guess :) ) does anyone know where i could go to find out what kind of bird it is by the picture?

just in case it :

has a Golden brown-orange head with a red stripe on the back of its head. it also has that golden brown-orange color underneath its wings and a little on the tail with white in the middle of its tail and black on the tip. it has a black collar looking line on the top of the breast and the rest is whiteish brown with black spots all over it. i guess by the little bit i can see of the back its kind of a dapple color of brown and white.

hope that helps.

This sounds like a Northern Flicker. They are a winter resident in the N Texas area. There are two forms, yellow-shafted and red-shafted. Yours sounds like a yellow, which is the more common form there. There are a few hybrids, where the underwing is bright orange.

Go to Cornell University. They have a huge ornithological department.

That looks like a woodpecker. There are many different kinds though.
