The Vatican (Pope John Paul II) has issued a statement that masturbation is not a sin, unless you over do it. If that is good enough for JP II, it is good enough for me. Ask your pastor. Just be careful if he offers to show you how it is done.

I'm a pastor. I don't think I've ever "preached a sermon" on the subject...let's just say that the topic isn't exactly that important to me...or to the understanding of the Gospel.
Now - when I do Spiritual Direction, and hear Confessions and grant Absolution, I sometimes hear about it. If I think the problem is "getting out of hand" (pun intended) - and because the root of the sin is lust anyway - then - I call it a sin and absolve the person.
It's no big deal. Show me a person that says they don't do it - and I'll show you a liar.
That's a sin, too, you know.

I'm sure the pastry would agree that masturbation is wrong if you do it with a warm apple pie.
Besides, its not as if the bible said anything about masturbation in the slightest. It implied that withdrawing toward the end of sex to release outside was sinful.... Thats not the same as masturbation at all.

I personally don't have a regular pastor. I've never heard them mention it in churchs I've attended. I've had to search these thing out for myself (like you) from scripture and historical teachings.
The papacy was the one to start this. They called it "Onanism" rather than masturbation. The Vatican's stance is that all seed is sacred (even the seed from rape, incest, etc)...which I find to be rather disgusting and blasphemous, myself.
Onan's sin was not spilling His seed on the ground (per se) it was that he defrauded his deceased brother and his brother's widow of a child. here's the verses aboput Onan's behavior, decide for yourself:
(Gen 38:8) And Judah said unto Onan, Go in unto thy brother's wife, and marry her, and raise up seed to thy brother.
(Gen 38:9) And Onan knew that the seed should not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother's wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest that he should give seed to his brother.
(Gen 38:10) And the thing which he did displeased the LORD: wherefore he slew him also.
We know that even looking on a woman other than your wife in lust is adultery from what Christ said. this is really a matter for one's own heart..as they are the only one to know it, other than God Himself. If you are doing it to keep from adultery (because wife is sick, too tired, has a lower need for sex) and fantasize only about her...I don't see where you've committed any sin; this is not giving permission because I'm speaking as a man here and not with authority.
If you use porn for it or fantasize about someone other than your wife, that's clearly a sin. If you are unmarried, sinful also.
A husband or wife should also not tell the other to "just go do that" all the time and deprive the other of intimacy; because, masturbation is just a cheap imitation of the real intimacy between a husband and a wife and refusing intimacy will breed resentment. There is scripture for that as well:
(1Co 7:3) Let the husband render unto the wife due benevolence: and likewise also the wife unto the husband.
(1Co 7:4) The wife hath not power of her own body, but the husband: and likewise also the husband hath not power of his own body, but the wife.
(1Co 7:5) Defraud ye not one the other, except it be with consent for a time, that ye may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; and come together again, that Satan tempt you not for your incontinency.
I hope this helps.

It's not really a stand most Church's take anymore. It derives from old Christian belief that sex of any kind was for procreation. Also Catholics had a law rule what ever you want to call it that basically said it is a sin for sperm to be wasted, which is why the official Catholic stand is no birth control.

I've never heard a preacher say anything regarding masturbation. But honestly, I don't think it's bad and I don't think it's seen as bad in the eyes of God.

I think it is- because you obviously are thinking of someone when you do it- and if you are married and do it- you are probably not thinking of your spouse- and I cannot say whether people who are married do think of their spouse- BUT the Bible tells us that those who are married should be intimate- there is a verse that says they can fast from intercourse for a short while but then they must come together again ( not those exact words but that is what it means) --So if you are doing this in a marriage and never having sex with eachother, that is wrong- God wants those who are married to be phyiscal that way- He designed it that way- for a man and woman.
Those who are not married- still I believe it's wrong because you are thinking of someone else and Jesus says that whoever looks upon someone with lust has already committed adultery with them in their heart---so if that is a sin- then masturbation would fall in that category seeing as it is causing lust- and impure thoughts about someone....BUT I think many do not know the exact answer to this- I just go with conviction on that one.

Think about it this way, when you do masturbating you are creating sexual images, and you force the sexual desire in your body,a thing clearly stated as a sin in Christianity..

for a long time, it was considered a sin, because the clergy wanted to control sex as solely for recreation.
nowadays, I think most people realize it's okay.
