...It means that we are commanded to love (by an act of the will whether feelings are present or not) our wives in the same that Jesus Christ loved the church - serving, loving, respecting, honoring, putting her first, and giving everything for them, even our lives if necessary.
...It is interesting to me that 3 times in Ephesians 5, husbands are commanded by God to love their wives - which tells me husbands must work at this one, and that it very important to God and no small thing that we love our wives.

Christ sacrificed Himself to give life to His church and greater love has no man than to lay down his life for his friends.
Husbands should love their Wives with a sacrificial love that wants the very best for them, not material possessions as such but to do all they can to show the loving and forgiving face of Christ in their relationship.

Just really what it says, Husband love your wife, As Christ loved the Church, Man is the head of a women as Christ is our head & Christ head is God. So our love should be that we will be willing to lay down our life for the wife.

Hey thanks for this question. Then I talk to other Christian men that are having problem in their marriage I use this verse. I DON'T use the one just above it for the wives. Christian men will never be anyone's wife so it's doesn't pertain to us. I hate it when men say "But she isn't obeying me as to the Lord" Not Our problem we ate NOT the Holy Spirit. The only person we have control over is ourself. So Love her as Christ Loves the Church. As a member of the Church (The Body of Christ) I can say with authority that the Church seldom obeys Her Lord. But he love her anyway and dies that She might live. As Christian men we are to do as Christ has done. When our wives rebel against us and go in a direction we do not approve of nor want her to follow.. We are to love her anyway and give up ourselves (our will, our comfort, our needs, that she can do as her will demands. It's a tough job and without Jesus holding us in His arms we couldn't do it.. I pray daily that I won't fail my good wife in this regard. I want to emulate my Lord in every way I can.... Jim

husbands should love their wives in the same way that Christ loves the church. Christ gave himself up for the church. He died for her, displaying unconditional and sacrificial love in order to sanctify his bride. He cleanses her with his word, leading to salvation, and then sanctifies her, leading her towards the ultimate goal of completed glory, i.e., holy and blameless, without spot or wrinkle.

That is how a husband should love his wife--by giving up his life for her and accepting her just the way she is. He must encourage her to grow to be the woman God wants her to be, not what he wants her to be. He should want her to be sanctified in all aspects of life--spiritually, emotionally, and physically. She is to blossom and flourish under his headship. A husband must give up his independence and submit to the Lord, responding in ways that are absolutely contrary to his selfish nature. He must be willing to suffer and even die to save his wife.

The Lord often uses the metaphor of marriage to describe our devotion to God. Christ devoted His time to nourishing and building up His disciples and eventually gave His life for the teachings He espoused. That death was for all of us, not just for the believers of His day. We should be as devoted to our wives, nourishing and developing them, and giving our all for them, including our lives if necessary, for their safety and security. If we would love our wives as completely as Christ loved the church, or His disciples inclusively, then we would have a lot less social misery in this life.
We then are to love Christ and God with a similar devotion.
As Christ said, love the Lord your God with all your heart, might, mind and strength and love your neighbor as yourself. If we would do that, our society would be peaceful.

I am going to change the question a bit. When my wife and I got married the priest read a Gospel passage (John, I think) which said "Love each other as I (Jesus) have loved you". To me this means there is nothing that my wife can do or say or think or not do etc. to make me stop loving her. It also means that I must forgive her anything if she is truly sorry.

It means husbands should make continuing efforts to show love to their wifes.
That's love .....not necessarily sex.
The example for husbands to follow is the way Jesus treated his disciples.
Matthew 11:29, 30 sums things up rather well.

It means that husbands should be pepared to constantly sacrifice themselves for their wives, even unto death for the two are one body as Christ is one body with His Church.
