My 3 month old puppy ate just fine before we had her fixed 2 weeks ago. After we had her fixed I guess she thought she was going to starve (we couldn't give her food 12 hours before the surgery) and she wouldn't eat for about a day after surgery. Then, she just started eating her food so fast and wouldn't chew it and would vomit. So we had to feed her rice and boiled hamburger meat for about a week. Well, she is keeping her food down fine but she eats SO fast!! She never chews it. And also when there is food out she doesn't even know anything else exsist. She use to not do this!! Has anyone else had this problem and do you know how to fix it!! Help Please!!

My dog is like this!! Sometimes they just get overly excited about food!

Talk to your vet about any ideas they have about how you can slow your puppy down, but there are a few techniques you can use. I used to put a big kong or toy in my puppies bowl. He would have to eat slower because he had to manuever around the toy. But you really should ask your vet for their suggestions!!

Good luck!

If it is upsetting you, you could invest in a toy that the dog has to play with or work on to get the food out.

Alternatively, you can use the food as treats that you hand feed. Measure her daily amount out. When she does something positive or responds to a command give her a handful of her kibble.

Either way she will still swallow it fast, but she cannot inhale it all at once this way and it keeps her mind active too.

Good luck!

It is okay. Feed her in smaller bits (like a scoop at a time until she is fed how much you want her to eat) so she isn't trying to inhale it all at once. I know it is hard, but my pups do the same thing, and then when one vomits, there is WHOLE food in it. Sorry to be gross... but I think it's pretty normal. Then they finally get used to their food for a few months and aren't as crazy. We came to my mom's house though, and her dog's food was out, and immediately my little guy ran to eat it and seriously, in two bites it was all gone.

Don't worry :)
Ask your vet if you think something is REALLY wrong

A lot of dogs are like this about food. My dog is obsessed with food, and inhales it like she's been starved for weeks. She never chews. We got a new dog sort of recenty and were surprised to see that he actually chewed his food. We've never had a dog chew his food like that!

Since this is a new behavior for your dog, I would definitely recommend talking to your vet. You might be able to call and talk to someone over the phone, although your vet might suggest coming in so that he/she can weigh your dog, check her out to make sure she doesn't have any problems, etc. You don't want to take any chances with your dog's health.

Im not relly sure, I have a fixed boxer that did that for a while but he eats fine now. One of my pit puppies does the same thing but she is not fixed. Try giving him a tiny bit of food at a time, like hand feed him for a while and see i that helps.

I had the same problem with my rottweiler. He would eat so fast he would throw it all up right after. I tried the tennis ball trick but all he did was take it out and then eat lol. So I started adding warm water to his food. it slowed him down some since he had to stop to breath. Hope this helps

Is it possible to leave food out for her all day? Maybe if it was available she wouldn't feel the need to scarf it down so fast. Also, try feeding her very small amounts at a time, until she is full.

This is instinctive behavior. After a trauma or percieved threat, an animal will gorge him/herself. Its a hardwired instinct to ensure survival. When the threat or trauma has been resolved, the desired behavior should return. You can help by hand feeding - this shows the animal that, even though others are present, no one else is after its food .

For a dog that gets this excited about food you should try to bore it with food. Give the dog 24 hour access to food for aout 2 weeks.

Is it dry dogfood you're feeding her? If so, put a rock in the middle of it. She will have to eat around the rock and that will make her eat it slower. Or, get an angelfood cake pan and put her food in that. She will have to eat around that and that will make her eat slower.
