Xanax (alprazolam) and Ativan (lorezapam) are both very effective, but not without side-effects. If you are on the drugs and you are not getting relief, talk to your doctor.
However, since you are asking the question...I am assume you don't have any meds available. Given that; here is what to do...
1. Immerse yourself in something that will change your thought pattern. Put on headphones and listen to your favorite music, play with your pets, talk to a friend, spouse, whatever.
2. Do whatever you can to remind yourself that what you are feeling is in response to something THAT IS NOT REAL! A panic attack is a response to a situation that does not exist.
3. Talk to your doctor. Make sure he knows what you are going through. If he discounts you, if he says you just need to relax...fire him and find a new one. Panic attacks are a very real illness that needs very real treatment.
Best of luck to you. I hope this helps.

Your mental health comes first. Find the money to see a doctor and get medication if the doctor deems it necessary. Do without something. Just find the money. You are worth it. Health is always the most important factor in your life. Antidepressants and benzos are the best meds for panic attacks. Don't be afraid or embarrassed to take them if they are prescribed for you. Now to help you in the meantime ... deep, slow, rhythmic breathing will soothe and calm your nervous system and ease the panic attack after a few steady minutes of doing so. But, if your panic attacks are a common occurence, your best bet is preventive medicine. I know how horrid panic attacks are. I hope you get to see a doctor real soon.

Did you ever hear the phrase "fight or flight"? I've been suffering from panic attacks for 3 years now, I am on meds but a very low dosage. I still experience the attacks once in a while.
Best thing to do is fight! Don't leave the room or avoid the situation. As hard as it might feel at that moment. Do breathing techniques, slow, very slow deep breathes, tell yourself YOU are in control and this is going to pass. I hope this helps, good luck!

What is the treatment for panic attacks?
Thanks to research, there are a variety of treatments available, including several effective medications, and specific forms of psychotherapy. Often, a combination of psychotherapy and medications produces good results. Improvement is usually noticed in a fairly short period of time, about 6 to 8 weeks. Thus, appropriate treatment for panic disorder can prevent panic attacks or at least substantially reduce their severity and frequency-bringing significant relief to 70 to 90 percent of people with panic disorder.
In addition, people with panic disorder may need treatment for other emotional problems. Depression has often been associated with panic disorder, as have alcohol and drug abuse. Recent research also suggests that suicide attempts are more frequent in people with panic disorder. Fortunately, these problems associated with panic disorder can be overcome effectively, just like panic disorder itself.
Tragically, many people with panic attacks do not seek or receive treatment.

Ativan or Valium. Try talking yourself through it. Try breathing exercises. Try doing something to keep your mind busy or something that is positive that you enjoy doing.
