To keep the balance between matter and space. This balance is essential for the laws of physics to exist as we know them. Theory of the big bang says that our universe is expanding and we dont know what will happen when it reaches its limits and laws of physics change.... some scientists say the universe will start to collaps then. Its in the Bible...
Isaiah 34:4
"4 All of the army of the sky will be dissolved. The sky will be rolled up like a scroll, and all its armies will fade away, as a leaf fades from off a vine or a fig tree."

While I don't hold to the notion of a creator, I suspect motion would be a good enough reason. Things that move need something to move into. If it's too crowded, nothing can move. This is the case of low-level physics as much as it is the macroscopic view of space.

Go with "42". It's not as "empty" as you might think. Also we have gobs & heaps of "dark matter" that we haven't even detected - we think there's actually lots more of the "dark matter" than the type we fool around with all the time.
