Getting to feel like you "know" this person, and then opening up to them about personal things. There is NO way to know who you are really talking to, and there's a lot of good people out there, but there's also an awfully lot of bad ones.
Once you begin to feel as if you really know someone, you might give them your phone number, then eventually set up a meeting. You might be meeting a great person, or you might be meeting a psycho that has just enjoyed the chase and is about to get their prey.
Chat, but keep it at that. Only chat. No personal info, no phone numbers, last names, cities you live in, identifying information, etc. If you can do that, it should be perfectly safe.

I'm going to assume you said chatting. Actually, if you don't give your adress and phone and personal info then there's really nothing wrong, just don't give personal info

If you are chatting just don't:
meet them
tell them where you live
give them your last name
give them any photos of you
