It's not about how many countries that speak it, it's all about how many in that country. (China with 1.3 billion population)
Let's put in into perspective. If you put all the people in the WORLD (around 6.5 billion) in groups of 100. There will be 20 chinese in every group. English ranks 3rd behind 2nd place Hindi spoken by Indians.
Now the kicker, by 2025 the Indian population is expected to overtake the Chinese. By then Hindi will be 1st, Chinese 2nd and English will be a distant 3rd.
However, if you consider geographic coverage, English will probably rank number one for now.
