Engineers see real world problems and come up with effective and cost-efficient solutions that would benefit society. I'm an engineer (or at least have a degree) and my friends and I used to come up with solutions for small problems that used to bug us right in the faculty! I never would have been able to do that before. Plus, you have the skills to do it yourself, instead of hiring and paying someone else to do it.

Engineering is an exciting fiels to get into. What Engineers are and how they differ from other professionals? The definition of Engineering is those who work with forces that are not visible and make use of them for the good of humanity. Physicists work with the Science behind things where as Engineers work with unseeble. I am an Engineer and worked on cutting edge projects of those times and it was exciting. Since it was just after graduation it was also time for consolidation of all what we learned before that. Though I have changed profession to management, the memories of my Engineering days still linkers on sometimes and gives me wonderful feeling whenever I embark on some Engineering problem solutions that comes by once in a while. I also had ambitions of working for NASA and other major projects, but circumstances took me out of my chosen profession and got into economics and management which also I enjoy nowadays. As an Engineer my advice is to figure out the invisible forces work with things that can only be imagined but cannot be felt and make them work for the causes of human race. It is exciting, challenging and creative pursuit for those who are inclined to do so.

Engineers happen to also be called "The Sons of Martha", from a poem of the same name composed by Rudyard Kipling. Basically, the reason I became an engineer is to make the world a better (safer, more efficient, quieter, stronger, etc) place for my fellow human beings. I've learned a lot of things from books, but even more by the doing of things. I expect I still have a lot to learn and to do ... and to teach.
The poem is appended below.

The sons of Mary seldom bother, for they have inherited that good part;

As an engineer, I wanted to become one so that I could work on exciting and cutting edge projects. Personally, I work as an aerospace engineer. I work for a NASA contractor on the Shuttle and Ares programs. It's a great feeling to watch a launch and know that you had something to do with the safe and successful flight of that rocket.
It's also exciting and interesting work, and also very challenging. You have to use all facets of knowledge in today's engineering fields from basic book smarts to common sense. And as engineers we interface with customers and vendors alike, not to mention the teams we work with to accomplish staggering deadlines. It keeps life interesting and gives you real pride in your work. Plus, the pay ain't bad :).
This is just one engineer's humble opinion. Others may have different experiences.

An engineer takes knowledge from mathematics, physics, and other fields depending on the field you go into like chemical, mechanical, electrical, and uses that knowledge to create or improve things in our everyday lives. I am a wireless communications engineer and I use my knowledge to enhance cell phone customer's experience, including better coverage, better internet services. It is a great experience for me knowing that because of me, customers will be happier and safer (911 calls) because I was able to improve their experience. And as one guy mentioned, the pay ain't bad.

As a civil engineer, I enjoy challenging and defeating nature. Nature is crafty, so an engineer always has to be on his or her toes. Nature is always watching. Waiting.
