No it's not too late at 8 weeks. Go ahead and get him bobbed. All the other boxers will make fun of him if you don't.

The tail can be removed but at this point it would not be a simple tail docking, it would be considered an amputation and would have much higher risk of infection and persistant pain. Not recommended. The only time a grown dog should have it's tail amputated is if it's tail get broken which can cause considerable pain (much like walking around with a broken back)
At least you are doing the research instead of chopping it off with an axe like some fools do!

Tail docking is a barbarack practice. The reason why it is done on young puppies is because they can't move. At a few days old the vet will simply chop off the puppies tails, no anestetic or pain meds at all! The dew claws are simply pulled out using a pair of pliers when the tails are docked. It is a very painful procedue! If you mucst have his tail docked off wait until he is old enought to be fixed and get them both done at the same time. Then ask for pain meds to help him!

You CAN have it done, but it will cost a lot more than if he had had it done at the "normal" trime. (Most tails are docked much earlier - like 3 or 4 days old) Actually, someone was just asking about this a couple of days ago, and said his vet told him it would be $300. This is because, once they get older, their tail has developed bones, and the surgery is much more complex and requires anesthesia.
Honestly, I prefer the look of unaltered dogs (I mean aesthetically, not "unaltered" as in not spayed or neutered - PLEASE make sure you get him fixed!!) In the old days, dogs had their ears & tails cropped for "job" reasons - like hunting or pulling sleds, where long ears & tails might get in the way. Nowadays, when dogs are generally just companion animals, there's really no need to out them through this. Especially when the animal is old enough to feel the pain.

Yes, but please don't. The breeder should have had it done at 3 -5 days old, when the nerves, blood supply, etc, were not so developed in the tail (which makes me wonder what quality this 'breeder' was?'). Now, it will be major surgery - very bloody & dangerous, if you can even find a vet willing to do the risky procedure.
p.s To those who are saying it is/isn't cruel: at 3-5 days old, vets remove the tail & dewclaws with with sterile scissors, the pups cry for a few minutes then settle down fine with no memory of the event (same as human boys getting circumcised). At 8 weeks old +, however, the pup would have to be put under anesthesia, the vet is cutting into a fully developed spine (risking paralysis, infection, etc) with developed nerves, veins, etc - I have witnessed this on a 1 year old Rottweiler a client insisted on having done & have never seen such a bloody surgery. They dog was in pain afterwards, and remained touchy about someone getting near its hind end after that. The vet said she would NEVER do that surgery again. Believe me, I would rather have a few occasional bruises on my leg from a happy Boxer I loved than put him through that trauma!

The reason why it is done when the pup is only a few days old is because the bones arent developed yet and so they can cut between the 2nd and 3rd vertebrae in the tail and not have any problems. they just stitch it up and thats it. as the pup gets older, its bones grow together. therefore, the older the dog is, the more risk it will be to do this procedure. i would simply call your vet and get their opinion. it can be done though.
i had my boxers dewclaws removed when he was 8 weeks old. its a simple procedure. they put the pup to sleep and remove them. the area is then stitched and bandaged and in i think it was 4-5 days, the bandages can come off.

The breeder or the vet will usually dock tails as early as possible, if it's going to be done. They clip them off as young as three days old so the bones in the tail haven't yet hardened and the joints haven't connected together so they are easy to cut between.
8 weeks old is too old for a tail docking to be done simply. It would be a major amputaion at this point, requiring anesthesia and a day in the hospital. I would advise against having this done.

Docking is done at 2-3 days previous. 5 days on the recent. After that that is an amputation and no vet is going to amputate a healthful tail. (except for imported instruct canines of docked breeds in international places were docking is legal) you're exhibiting to be posting from the united kingdom the position docking replaced into banned besides and Boxers except used for police or protection force artwork does not fall lower than the exception. sure Boxers are very weak to satisfied tail (tail injuries for wagging their tail into such issues as doors, walls etc). If this takes position amputation is mostly ultimately required. not something you may do to avert your canines from having to undergo an amputation that is an amputation at this aspect besides. you'll purely ought to attend and observe and characteristic it amputated if the favor arises. purely placed funds decrease back to pay for the surgical procedure could he favor it. the shown truth that docking isn't only for visual attraction and doesn't purely avert injuries in operating canines is something legislatures did not complication to make sure and the anti-dock set doesn't favor people to understand, even as they commence passing/pushing for those guidelines. desire your pup is between the fortunate ones that doesn't ought to regulate a tail damage

It can be done, its just easier when they are pups. As they get older the bone hardens. It is a bit more painful and complicated the older the dog. Get a good vet and ask their advice. I always have dew claws removed. They can become a problem later on.

Yes you can get the tail docked. I have a doberman and her tail was not docked short enough so I took her to the vet around your dog's age and had the tail docked to the appropriate length. I don't feel this is being cruel. Compare it to humans who goes through plastic surgery. It is a choice of the individual. To each their own. Schedule your appointment as soon as possible. I wish you and your K9 family all the happiness for many years to come.

Yes you can still have the tail removed if you really want to. However, instead of it being a quick minor procedure without anesthesia(called tail docking, usually done within 3 days of being born), your dog would have to have an actual surgery. Tail amputation. This is much more drastic. More pain is involved. I wouldn't recomend it.
