For the purpose of your propoganda teachings and a good grade:

1) They consume land resources
2) They create methane gas
3) They attract pests
4) They stink
5) They are unsightly.

Now, for the real information:
1) The land resources are minimal. We could dig a hole 24 miles wide that would be enough to store all of our trash, and our future gerneration's trash for 5000 years. Also, after they are filled in with clay and all the methane tapped and then rerouted, they can become beautiful parks and resorts. You can't build on them, but they can become green spaces or even golf courses.

2) The methane gas can be harvested and used to power homes

3) Modern landfills are nothing like what you see in your books. They are clean, sculpted, and covered with clay, which absorbs the odors and leads me to number 4..

4) Since the garbage piles are covered up daily with several feet of clay, pests are kept at a minimum. and...

5) if you were to drive by a modern landfill, you would notice nothing but mounds of red clay, and green space where they have started converting the older sections.

Problems With Landfills

2016-10-07 05:25:24 · answer #2 · answered by ? 4 · 0 0

1. They take up a lot of land space (land that could have been used for other developments)

2. They fill up quickly...harder to find new locations / sites to make a new landfill

3. They pose as an environmental threat. Leachate (a toxic liquid) is produced from all the waste in a landfill and if a landfill is not lined properly, the leachate will escape and contaminate the water table. This poses a threat to river systems, communities and organisms that rely on the underground water sources. Thus their health and ecological systems suffer.

4. They attract disease carrying pests (rats, cockroaches etc)

5. They smell and are unsightly.

Five problems, First off, landfills are unsustainable because they perpetuate a failing classical economic linear capitalistic system: i.e. manufactured product to store, to consumer, to landfill.
Second they are on track to being the greatest Superfund sites from now until thousands of years into the future.
Third, they are full of toxic waste, both from consumers and the manufacturing process.
Fourth, they will leak and contaminate ground water supplies.
Fifth, it is a very bad way to store resources.
